At random: The first periscope used by the United States Navy was not built for a submarine. The ironclad monitor OSAGE utilized a periscope to discover a Confederate cavalry unit taking cover behind the high banks of the Red River in Arkansas.

I hadn’t seen anyone else post about this, so I thought I would.

The Seattle Base will be holding its annual Tolling of the Boats ceremony this coming Saturday, August 16, 2008, at the Kirkland Marina Park Pavilion in Kirkland WA.

We will start with lunch around 11:30, the Navy Band will start playing around 1:00, and the ceremony will get underway around 2:00. If you are in the Puget Sound area, please feel free to drop by and join us in honoring our lost shipmates.

I’ve included a couple photos from last year’s ceremony below.
