BAKER, Joseph E., 65, of Brookfield, died Tuesday, August 12, 2008 in Easton, MA, as a result of a plane accident while flying an Angel Flight mission. He was born January 6, 1943 in Richmond, Va. He is the son of the late Joseph Julian and Martha Duerson Baker. Joseph graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1965 with a BS in Chemistry. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton Business School and obtained his MBA in 1968. He was a lieutenant in the United States Navy and served on the USS Barbel and USS Trigger as a Submarine Officer from 1968 to 1972. He worked for Union Carbide Corporation from 1972 to 1986. From 1986 to 1990, he was a Business Controller with Amoco Performance Products. From 1994 to 2008, he was a realtor for Raveis Real Estate, Coldwell Banker Real Estate and then McCaffrey Real Estate. Joe's life was interwoven within the fabric of Brookfield's community. From 1983 to 1989 and from 1998 to 2008, he was treasurer for the Valley Presbyterian Church; from 2006 to 2008, he served on the Board of Trustee's for the Presbytery of Southern New England. From 1991 to 1996, he served on the Brookfield Board of Education and then from 2000 to 2008, he served on the Brookfield Republican Town Committee. In addition, he served on the Brookfield Charter Revision Committee in 1997 and 2007 and was a CT Justice of the Peace from 2005 until 2008. He was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America as well as a member of the Order of the Arrow and participated with the local troops since 1988 in various roles. Actively supportive of his children's interests, he was very involved in the Brookfield Swimming Community, serving as starter, judge, record keeper and avid fan. Joseph is survived by his wife, Terri E. Robinson Baker and his children, Peter J. Baker, Martha A. Baker and Jeffrey R. Baker. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 17, 2008 between the hours of 2 and 5 p.m. at the Valley Presbyterian Church located at 21 West Whisconier Rd., Brookfield CT 06804, 203-775-2624 A Memorial Service for Joe will be held Monday, August 18, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Valley Presbyterian Church. TEIXEIRA, John Patrick “Tex”, QMC(SS), USN, Ret, 86, US Navy retiree and World War II veteran, passed away August 14, 2008, after a long illness. He was born in New Bedford, Mass., and was the son of the late John and Capitolina Teixeira. Chief Teixeira "Tex" retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service. He served in World War II and the Korean conflict. While serving in the Navy, he was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V," the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 10 stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation ribbon, the Philippine Defense Medal and the Submarine Combat Insignia with nine stars, the Good Conduct Medal with four stars and the Navy Unit Commendation Medal. As a young quartermaster, he was selected to be on the original crew of the first nuclear powered submarine, SSN-571 Nautilus, commissioned in 1955. Before the Nautilus, he served on the following diesel submarines: USS Tang, USS Triton, USS Thresher, USS Pelias, USS Tambor, USS Tinosa, USS Tarpon, USS Spikefish, USS Atule, USS Kingfish and USS Carp. His shore career included NROTC instructor at the University of Notre Dame and he was attached to the COMSUBLANT Staff in Norfolk. After retirement from the Navy, he was employed by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. Tex was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church for 35 years, a life member of Submarine Veterans of World War II and life member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 60, Ocean View. He served as East Coast Regional president from 1986-1987. Tex was honored with secretary emeritus in the Fleet Reserve Association after 19 years as branch secretary. He served all branch offices with honor. Tex leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Veronica French Teixeira; two daughters, Sally Spollen of Norfolk and Jackie Bittle of Suffolk; three grandchildren, Susan Bittle Patel and her husband Chiraag of Edison, N.J., Sean Spollen of Annandale, Va., and Casey Spollen of Norfolk; a great-granddaughter, Kiran Patel; and stepson, Robert Osterloh and his wife Christy of Richmond, Va. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Capitolina Teixeira; sister, Azalea; and brother, Edmund Teixeira, all formerly of Taunton, Mass. He leaves behind his sister, Lydia Teixeira Phillipe of North Dighton, Mass., as well as many nieces and nephews in New England and Washington, D.C. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 154 W. Government Ave., Norfolk, with the Rev. Father Robert E. French officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Following visitation, FRA ritual will be accorded. Final interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at 1 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008.
