KIRKLAND, Richard Geoffrey 'Geoff’', CAPT, USNR, Ret., 65, of Charlotte passed away at home on August 17, 2008 after a long battle with ALS. Mr. Kirkland was born in New York, NY on August 28, 1942, the son of James Lewis Kirkland and Elizabeth Why, who precede him in death. Mr. Kirkland was a 1964 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Upon graduation he entered the Submarine service where he spent 12 years active duty and 10 years reserve duty. His Navy career was instrumental in his many long term friendships and interests, especially travel. Geoff also graduated from Cornell University with a Masters Degree in Hospitality, a field he worked in for more than 25 years having owned his own consulting business. He sang in the Naval Academy choir, and in his church choir for many years. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Dorothy Mullins Kirkland and a son, Steven and his wife, Jodi and grandchildren, Chloe, Jenna and Jack of all Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by sisters, Leslie Coker of Annapolis, MD and Jill Denoff of West Palm Beach, FL. A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Friday, August 22, 2008 at Matthews United Methodist Church with Dr. Kenneth Lyon officiating. Interment will follow on November 24, 2008 at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 2008 at McEwen - Mint Hill Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the ALS Association or Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte. Condolences to the family may be made at www.mem.com. MAITNER, James Bouman, 85, of Grand Rapids, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2008. James was born October 13, 1922 and graduated from Creston High School. He honorably served his country during WWII serving in the US Navy in the Submarine Service, was a retiree of Whitaker Electric. He served as Captain on the Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Maitner and his son, Mike Maitner. Surviving are his daughter, Cheryl and Richard Casterline; his grandchildren, Dawn Johnson, Ryan and Ginele Johnson; his great grandchildren, Riley, Conner and Marley; his special friend, Barb Krause. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Heritage Life Story Funeral Home, Van Strien - Creston Chapel, 1833 Plainfield N.E. with Pastor Joel Hoyer of Grace Lutheran Church of Coopersville officiating. Interment will be in Fairplains Cemetery. Mr. Maitner reposes at the funeral chapel where relatives and friends may meet his family Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Friday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. RICHLEN, Laurence B. "Larry", 62, passed away suddenly on Monday, August 18, 2008. Beloved husband of Yvonne "Vonnie". Dear dad of Dan (Melissa) and Jeff (Anna). Loving "Papa Lar" to Emma, Joshua, Nicholas and Sadie. Preceded in death by his loving parents Marge and Marty. Larry was the proud owner of Future Electric, Inc. for 30+ years. He was a Vietnam Veteran in the U.S. Navy aboard the submarine USS Rock (SS-274). He was a member of the West Allis Electrical Inspection Board, the Blessed Sacrament "Usher Crew", and the Harley Owners Group (HOG). He had a passion to be on his bike, was a true open-wheel race fan, and had a love for hunting with his boys. He is a 1963 graduate of Notre Dame High School. He always had time for his cherished grandchildren and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of grandchild #5 (Dan and Melissa). Visitation will be held on Fri., Aug. 22, from 4-8 PM. Prayer service at 6:30 PM, at the funeral home. MILLER, Sr., Thomas Harry, 83, of the Roxborough section of Philadelphia, died suddenly on August 17, 2008 of a heart attack.
Mr. Miller was born on December 15, 1924, and was raised in the East Falls section of Philadelphia. He graduated in 1942 from Germantown High School where he played varsity baseball, basketball, and soccer. He was an honorably discharged Veteran of World War II, having served as a motor machinist's mate aboard the submarine USS Spadefish (SS-411). In preparation for this service he attended Great Lakes Naval training School and the New London Submarine School. He served all five patrols aboard the Spadefish, the last in the Sea of Japan as one of nine submarines dubbed the Mighty Mine Dodgers. Upon return to the United States, he was discharged with the rank of Motor Machinist's Mate First Class. Along with his Spadefish Shipmates, he received the Presidential Unit Citation. In the immediate postwar period, he played semi-pro baseball and soccer. He graduated from college preparatory at Temple University, then began his association with the building trades in 1947. He was a lather by trade and was elected in 1955 the Recording Secretary of the Lathers' Union. He became the business agent of the Lathers' Union in 1957. From 1961 to 1964 he served as a representative of the Wood, Wire, and Metal Lathers' International Union. His interest in labor issues widened and in 1965 he was elected secretary-treasurer of the Pennsylvania Building and Construction Trades Council. He was elected president of this labor organization in 1983 and served in this office until his retirement on September 1, 1994. He was a president emeritus of the Pennsylvania Building and Construction Trades Council after serving as its secretary-treasurer and president. His task was to create and sustain a labor council for the purpose of giving the building and construction trades a voice in Harrisburg. He was a registered lobbyist with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, during the course of which he met President Carter, President Reagan and President Clinton. He served on committees appointed by the Governor of Pennsylvania and United States Senators. He served 29 years, working for the passage of Pennsylvania's Prevailing Wage Act of 1961. He married his devoted wife, Laura Mae (nee South) in 1948. She preceded him in death in 1983. He is survived by his daughter, Diane Kearns; sons, Thomas Jr., and Robert; son-in-law, Michael Kearns; and grandson, Michael Kearns, Jr. Relatives and friends are invited to the viewing Thursday August 21st, from 7-9 p.m., at the Koller Funeral Home, 6835 Ridge Avenue (corner of Livezey) in Philadelphia. The funeral service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Ridge Avenue and Cathedral Road in Philadelphia at 10 a.m. Internment will be in Forest Hills Cemetery. WEILER, James L. "Jimmy", 84, of Pinellas Park, passed away August 19, 2008. He was born in Newark, NJ and came to St. Petersburg, FL in 1969 from Edison, NJ. He retired as a machinist for Space Machine of St. Petersburg. Jimmy was a Navy Submariner and a Veteran of WWII. He was a member of Cornerstone Community Church in St. Petersburg. He was preceded in death by his grandson, B.J. Weiler. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Beverly; a son, Barry James Weiler of Pinellas Park; a daughter, Judith Lynn Zikow and her husband, Gerald of Gulfport; 2 granddaughters, Denise Hamlett and her husband, Chip and Whitney Young; and 3 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Tristan and Liz Hamlett. A gathering of friends will be held at Cornerstone Community Church Sunday from 1-2 pm where a memorial service will follow at 2 pm.
