At random: The USS Blenny SS 324, on her last patrol of WW II sank 63 vessels. One by torpedo and 62 by deck gunfire, demolition charges set by boarding parties or by burning. On several occasions shotguns were fired through the boats bottoms. These were all vessels under the 500 ton JANAC limit for tonnage sunk and not counted in the "official" totals or ships sunk. This is also a record for the most vessels ever sunk by a submarine on one patrol.

BARKSDALE, Glenn F., 65, died Saturday, August 16, 2008 from complications of cancer. He graduated from EJHS in '61. He served in the naval submarine service on the USS Odax (SS-484) from '65 to '67, followed by several yrs. in the naval reserves. He met his wife Darlene while attending UNO, and they married in '68. His experience with the Navy led him to choose employment in the shipbuilding industry. After working thirty years with SUPSHIP 8th Naval District, he continued his career with Boland Marine as a project superintendent. He was an active member of Lures & Liars, N.O. Marine Club, Sub Vets, Delta Safety Society, and Mark Twain Club. He enjoyed traveling, was an avid fisherman, a history enthusiast, and an aspiring golfer. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; their 4 children, Eddie, Dave, Julie, and Debi; 5 grandchildren.; his brother Douglas and wife, Janet; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd in Metairie, on Sat., Aug. 23. Visitation will be from 2-5pm, with mass following. DAVIS, Raymond E., 78, Chief Petty Officer, SS, U.S. Navy, retired, husband of Mona J. (Roy) Davis, passed away August 19, 2008, at a local health care facility, after a period of failing health. Ray, one of seven children, was born October 28, 1929, to Roy and Helen (Taubler) Davis in Toronto, Ohio. He was an electrician by trade, a submarine sailor for 20 years, worked for Monsanto for 18 years, the U.S. Immigration Service for eight years and was a member of American Legion Post No. 49. He spent many a day with family and friends fishing for striped bass and blue fish in Long Island Sound. He loved to tell "sea stories" and how could we ever forget what an avid hockey fan he was. Surviving, in addition to his wife, Mona of Hamlin, are his son, Raymond A. Davis and wife, Lee, of Old Lyme, Conn.; his daughter, Patricia Schaefer and husband, John, of Plainfield, Ill., several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, two sisters and three brothers and their families. He was predeceased by his daughter, Donna; and one of his brothers. There will be a graveside service with military honors 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at St. Bruno Cemetery, Van Buren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Van Buren Ambulance Service, in care of Peter Laplante, 51 Main St., Van Buren, ME 04785.
