At random: The first boat known to have been navigated under water was built in 1620 by a Dutchman, Cornelius Van Drebbel. Van Drebbel is said to have developed a chemical which would purify the air and allow the crew to stay submerged for extended periods. |

Old Salt Posts: 338 Location: Oak Island, NC | Subject: RE: Humorous Posts Donald L. Johnson - 2008-08-28 12:34 AM I used to hit the Waffle House on the way home from the Flyin' Dutchman when I was on the 622 in Charleston. One of the things I really miss from back there. Wow, the Flyin' Dutchman. I haven't thought about that fine establishment(!) in years. I remember in '86 or '87, I had tickets to see George Thorogood & the Delaware Destroyers at Gailliard Auditorium, when they discovered that they were double-booked. Of course George lost (can't have blues riff-raff over the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, after all) so they had to find a new venue. The Dutchman was chosen, and it turned out to be much better than Gailliard for his style of entertainment. Afterwards, if you were REALLY brave, you could cross Dorchester Road and go to the Hayloft or the Silver Slipper. Ah, those were the days.. for a youngun like me anyway. Chuck

Since I retired the 18 wheels I don't get that far into N. Chasn anymore. My "Ball & Chain" has the Silverado on a GPS recorder.

Old Salt Posts: 338 Location: Oak Island, NC | Subject: RE: Humorous Posts Yeah, I know-- I still maintain my home in Goose Creek, right behind the Wal-Mart. There's not much reason to be on that end of Dorchester anymore, although from time to time when I'm up that way, I take a drive down toward the old base just for a nostalgia trip. I may live in South Florida, but South Carolina is still in my blood and I will return!!

They had a dancefloor lit from underneath as I recall. There was a place in the same area that had great deep-dish pizza (back when that was a "new" thing). It was open late... but I can't remember the name...

Both are doing well, thanks for asking, number 1 is settling in at UMass Dartmouth, and number 2 well, I'm still working on getting her to apply her EMT as a career not a hobby...and you are right, I am beyond help, hell I'm even covorting with Coasties and other surface craft types now, I guess that there's nothing I won't stoop to now... Great Sage of the Sea Posts: 602 Location: Visalia, Ca. | Subject: RE: Humorous Posts I spent more time on the Country Side than the Rock Side of the Dutchman. Too many people, too much noise most of the time. Besides, I kinda had a thing going with the barmaid/cook on the country side, slender blonde, Kim something. We got to be background in the bar scenes when they filmed a TV movie there, "Georgia Peaches", with Tanya Tucker, in 1981. They did get some good live acts into the Rock Side. I remember Marshall Tucker Band, Skynrd, and the Earl Scruggs Revue, among others. Went back in 1990 during Nuclear Repair Planner School - Kim was gone, married to some (other) boomer sailor, Rock Side was still popular, Country Side was turned into a strip joint. But Buddy and John, the owners, remembered me! One of these days, I'm goin' back again....

Old Salt Posts: 338 Location: Oak Island, NC | Subject: RE: Humorous Posts By all means, get back to Charleston, but know that not only is the Dutchman no longer open, the building is no longer there, unless you're counting when it moved to just outside the viaduct gate as a strip club only. I won't even get out of the car in that area any more.
