At random: John Philip Holland built several submarines before the USS Holland, which became the first undersea craft commissioned by the U.S. Navy. The Holland was purchased on April 11, 1900 for a price of $150,000. It was commissioned into the US Navy on October 12, 1900.

Listening to the album is available on http://www.rhapsody.com/mikewatt/contemplatingtheengineroom, but I'm gonna warn you.. If you aren't totally familiar with today's punk rock music, you might want to prepare yourself for an audio onslaught unlike that which you probably haven't experienced up to this point in some of the songs (The Bluejacket's Manual, for example). I'm buying it, if for no other reason than to annoy the others in cubicles around me.
