The music was distinctly heard on the surface.

From Dolphin Tales 1971 era:
After completing a firing run and returning to periscope depth, the Commanding Officer was deeply distressed at having missed the target after developing a perfect fire control solution. The cause was determined to have been a misunderstanding between the Commanding Officer and the Fire Control Party.

                "Misunderstanding my foot!" countered the DIVCOM.

                "But sir, it could have happened to anyone." said the Captain.

                "Phooey." cried the DIVCOM. "You used improper phraseology throughout. Not only that, you should have been at 150 feet."

                The Diving Officer below in Control heard and acknowledged, "150 feet, aye aye sir!"

                "Negative, negative!" screamed the DIVCOM.

                "Flood negative, aye aye sir!"

                As the ship leveled off at 150', a red faced Division Commander turned to a smiling CO and said, "Jack, you have just completed a 4.0 torpedo shoot."
