At random: ENS Sam Hunter, the first submarine casualty of WWII on Dec. 8, 1941. He was attached to Sea Dragon moored next to Sealion. He was killed by shrapnel from the first bomb hit on Sealion penetrating the conning tower of Sea Dragon. The second hit killed 4 men in Sealions Engineroom.

CLAUSON, Ralph Andrew, 86, passed away peacefully September 1, 2008. He is survived by his sister Barbara Holm of Michigan City, Indiana; three children: son Roy of San Juan Island, Washington, daughter Wendy Clauson Schlereth and son-in-law Thomas Schlereth of Granger, Indiana, son Edward and daughter-in-law Leslie Clauson of Seattle, Washington. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Lars Schlereth of Granger, Indiana; Heather Manuel of Snoqualmie, Washington; Erik Clauson of Seattle, Washington; Trisha Clauson of Washington D.C.; Kirsten Clauson of Seattle, Washington and two great grandchildren: Conner and Claira Clauson of Seattle, Washington. Ralph was born on Staten Island, New York, to Andrew and Esther Clauson. He lived most of his life there working for the New York Telephone Company and raising his family. He served in the submarine service of the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ralph was a devoted husband and a loving father. He was married for 49 years to his wife Edna, until her death in 1995. They were active members of Hoyt Avenue Congregational Church and Calvary Presbyterian Church, Staten Island, New York. He loved pipe organs and organ music. He built pipe organs for both churches. Just prior to his death he was experimenting with building organ pipes out of paper. Ralph was also very interested in documenting his families' genealogy. He spent time in Sweden with his three children in 1998 researching family history. Upon returning he decided to move to Granger, Indiana to be near his daughter and her husband and designed and built a Swedish stuga where he lived until his death. Ralph will be cremated and interred next to his wife Edna in Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, New York. A memorial service will be held at the interment. NIXON, William P., 69, of 11 Muster Ln., Ledyard, CT died Tuesday September 2, 2008, after a brief illness. His wife Georgianna (Baker) Nixon died in 1987. Born in Milford, Mass., on Nov. 4, 1938, he was the son of William A. and Mary (Devito) Nixon and lived in Ledyard 40 years. Mr. Nixon was a career member of the Armed Forces, serving in the US Navy for 30 years. He started his submarine career as a Machinists Mate and was quickly promoted to Chief of the Boat. He served aboard many subs including the USS Skate, the USS George C. Marshall, the USS Irex and the USS Will Rodgers. He ended his career with the rank of Command Master Chief. Following his US Navy service Mr. Nixon worked as a mechanic for Sears. He was a graduate of Milford High School and earned his Associates Degree from Thames Valley Technical College. He enjoyed skeet shooting, computers, and muscle cars, especially corvettes. He was a Harley Davidson Motorcycle enthusiast and was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Submarine Vets. He was also a member of the Masons Lodge. He is survived by two sons, Stephen M. Nixon of Kenosha Wis., and Paul W. Nixon of New Durham, N.H.; a daughter Gianna M. Nixon-Saldinger of Rochester, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Andrew, Danielle, Morgan, and Stephen Jr.; a brother, Richard Nixon of Whitinsville, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday Sept. 5, in Tancrell-Jackman Funeral Home, 35 Snowling Rd., Uxbridge, Mass. Burial will follow in the VA National Cemetery in Bourne, Mass. Calling hours at the funeral home in Uxbridge are from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday Sept. 5. Donations in Williams memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. WHITAKER, Charles Courtlandt, 96, passed away August 31, 2008. He was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. He attended Emory University, University of Cincinnati and Woodrow Wilson School of Law. He proudly served his country in the submarine service of the U.S. Navy during WWII. Mr. Whitaker was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Lucile Wilson Whitaker and a brother, John Gregory Whitaker from Columbus, GA. In Jan., 1953, Mr. Whitaker moved his family to Bradenton and purchased West Coast Tractor Company, which he operated until 1987 when he retired. He bacame an active member of Rotary and maintained his membership for 40 years. In 1990 he was awarded The Paul Harris Medal for his dedication to the Rotary organization. Mr. Whitaker was a loyal and faithful member of Christ Church where he served on the vestry for more than one term and he opened the church on Sunday mornings for more than 30 years. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sarah Williams Whitaker, his three children, Sunny (Hugh) Jeffries, Dorothy (Harry) Breeze and Chuck (Maryann) Whitaker, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army at 1701 S. Tuttle Ave., Sarasota, FL 34239. Memorial service will be held at a later date.
