At random: The late Capt. Don Ulmer, USN SS (Ret.), and noted submarine author, began his military career by enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and in 1949 while serving as an electrical technician E-4 aboard the submarine USS Clamagore, he was transferred to the Naval Academy. When he asked his commanding officer why he was being sent to Annapolis, the skipper replied, "I don't think you're smart enough to make E-5 and I need the bunk space." Ulmer graduated in 1954 and in 1967 returned to command Clamagore, possibly the only officer to command a U.S. warship having served on it as an enlisted man.

SIEGEL, Robert "Bob" R., 72, passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland surrounded by family and friends. He was born on September 18, 1935. Bob joined the US Navy (RMSA) serving from 1953 to 1956 on board the submarine USS Torsk as radio operator. He also served as a frogman defusing deep water mines. On July 20, 1957, Bob married Dolores (Dee) Kotul in Hammond Ind. Bob worked for Lever Brothers Co. for 24 years as the safety administrative manager moving to California and then to New Jersey. In 1978 Bob and Dee moved their family to Midland as Bob began his 17 year career at Dow Corning Corporation as corporate safety director. After 30 years in the safety field, Bob was nominated and received The Safety Professional of the Year award in 1992 by the Michigan Safety Conference. Bob was a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, National Safety Management Society and the Saginaw Valley Safety Council. Bob also worked on occupational safety and Health Administration and Michigan Occupational Health and Safety Administration committees. Bob retired in 1995 from Dow Corning Corporation. Bob was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Sanford. His deep abiding faith, that touched many people's lives, was evident as he was always the first to offer assistance when called upon. In 1960 Bob started teaching CCD which combined two of his favorite passions, his faith and children. He was the first eucharistic minister at St. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Fountain Valley, Calif. for the Los Angeles Diocese. As director of the RCIA program at St. Brigids' Church, Bob was key in restructuring and implementing this program. Bob was a spiritual director and was involved in the lay ministry program for the Diocese of Saginaw. As a dynamic speaker, he enjoyed lecturing and was a lay preacher performing services for St. Brigids' Church as well as for funerals. Bob enjoyed spending time at the Abby of Gethsemani in Kentucky. He served as past executive director for the Lay Cistercian Society and was an active board member at present. Bob was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a "reading buddy" for his granddaughter Amy's class at St. John's Lutheran School. Bob is survived by his wife, Dolores "Dee"; children, Deborah (Joseph) Mikelonis, Randall (Terri) Siegel, Mark (Michele) Siegel, Theresa (Bill) Mabrey, Gregory Siegel, Sheila (Kevin) Worthington and Amanda (Andy) McDonald; grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Albertson, Teresa (Wally) Tumblin, Leslie and Amy Siegel, Andy, Agathe and Austin Mabrey, Amber Siegel, Ashley Worthington, and Brenden, Brianna and Donia McDonald; one great-grandchild due in December; one brother, Joseph (Joan) Siegel; and one sister Helen (Jim) Biegel. Bob was preceded in death by infant son, Robert R. Siegel Jr.; parents, Joseph and Minnie Siegel; and one brother, Frederick Siegel. Bob is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Bob had a great sense of humor with a great love of life and people. He was most often accompanied by one or several of his grandchildren ~ especially his "main assistant", his grandson Brenden. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, from St. Agnes Catholic Church in Sanford. Father James Hast OFM Cap. will officiate, with entombment in New Calvary Mausoleum. The rosary will be prayed by the Sanford Knights of Columbus Council, Friday evening at the funeral home.

McLEOD, Woodrow Clevelan, 82, of Pleasant Grove, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2008. Mr. McLeod served as a submariner in the United States Navy from September, 1941 until November, 1946. He served on the USS 0-8 (SS-69), USS Finback (SS-230), USS Herring (SS-233), USS Andrew Doria, USS Nashville and USS Moale. He participated in many combat actions and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, American Defense Medal, Adriatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Submarine Combat Patrol Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Medal. He was a proud member of the US Submarine Veterans of WWII and participated in the christening of the nuclear submarine, USS Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama, Birmingham and co-founded an independent insurance and real estate agency with his wife, in Hueytown, Alabama. He was a loving member of First Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove, AL and served as a Deacon and Sunday School Department Leader for many years. He and his wife were charter members of 'The Amazing Grays' senior choir. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary (Gerry) Douglas; daughter, Brenda McLeod and son, Kenneth McLeod and wife Donna. He has 3 grandchildren, Natalie McLeod Elrod (Andy), Alexandra Freeman Sproule (Alex) and Caleb McLeod. He has 2 great-grandchildren, Will and Emma Elrod. He is also survived by his brother, Grover S. McLeod and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover Cleveland McLeod and Lucille Meeks McLeod; his sister, Inez McLeod Roberts and his brother John M. McLeod. Visitation with his family will be on Thursday, September 18, from 5:30pm until 8pm at Patterson Forest Grove Funeral Home, Pleasant Grove, Alabama. His funeral service will be Friday, September 19, at 1pm at Patterson Forest Grove Funeral Home with burial at the adjoining cemetery. His service will be officiated by the Rev. Harold Newberry and the Rev. Daven Watkins of First Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove. His pall bearers are Caleb McLeod, Alex Sproule, Andy Elrod, Michael Elrod, Matthew Harris and Adam Harris. Honorary pall bearers are all past and present Deacons of First Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove.

HARRINGTON, Michael Scott, CDR, USN, 45, of Lawrence, KS died Saturday September 13, 2008, in St. Louis, Mo. He was born April 1, 1963, in Norman, OK, to W.G. Harrington and Sandra Cannon Harrington. He graduated from Lahoma High School in Lahoma, OK, in 1981 and then attended Oklahoma State University before enlisting in the US Navy in 1983. He was selected for the Nuclear Enlisted Commissioning Program in 1985 and obtained a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Kansas and then his commission from the US Navy in 1988. He trained as a nuclear submarine officer and served aboard the USS Kentucky as a Junior Officer, the USS Salt Lake City as the Engineering Officer, and the USS Chicago as the Executive Officer. He also served at USSTRATCOM in Nebraska, during which he earned an MA in Economics from the University of Oklahoma. He also served on the Pacific Fleet Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board and Chief of Naval Operation’s DEEP BLUE staff. He graduated from National War College in 2006 with a M.S. in National Security Strategy and was then assigned to the teaching staff at Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth. He married Brenda Bergdall of Meno, OK, on May 24, 1987, in Meno. They have one daughter, Haley. In 2006, Scott and his family moved to Lawrence, KS. Survivors include his wife, Brenda and daughter Haley, of the home; his parents of Lahoma, OK; a brother, Robie and wife Terresa of Blanchard, OK; a sister, Stacie Schultz of Lahoma,OK; his in-laws, Ron and Esther Bergdall of Meno, OK; four nieces, two nephews, an uncle Charles of Lawton, OK The memorial service for Commander Harrington will be 3 p.m. Saturday, September 20, 2008, at Fort Leavenworth Memorial Chapel. GILES, Jr., William Walker "Bill", 87, of Sanford, FL, formerly of Washington, DC died of cancer September 7, 2008. Born November 21 ,1920 in Howardsville, VA to the late William Walker and Josephine Giles. A WWII submariner aboard the USS S-31 and USS S-33, Bill was a member of Elks, American Legion, US Submarine Veterans of WWII and 3rd Degree Master Mason. He is survived by one son, William of Annapolis, MD; one daughter, Pauline "Dotty" Crothers of California; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Private arrangements by Collinson Family Funeral Home in Sanford.
