Navy: Submarine sailor dies in accident off Hawaii
39 minutes ago
HONOLULU (AP) — The Navy says a sailor died in an apparent accident on board a ballistic missile submarine off Oahu over the weekend.
Spokesman Lt. Cmdr. David Benham says the accident on the Bangor, Wash.-based USS Nebraska didn't affect the ship and no one else was injured.
Lt. Kyle A. Raines says the crew member was mortally injured while the sub was beneath the ocean's surface. He was given emergency medical treatment and placed on a medical helicopter, but Raines says he died before reaching a hospital.
The sailor's name hasn't been released.
Benham says the submarine was conducting routine submerged operations at the time of accident Saturday.
The Nebraska is an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine. The ships are designed for stealth and the precision delivery of nuclear warheads.

The young man has been identified as 21 year old MM3 Michael A. Gentile of Fairfield, Maine.
I have added his name to the list of lost crew at: http://www.pigboats.com/lostcrew/losses.html Scroll to to the bottom of the page. It is a large file. Please let it load. The list is now 4023 long with this loss. Pray there are no more.

According to the Virginian-Pilot, he was involved in a "cleaning evolution" (PC for field day?), and came in contact with the rudder ram. |

Palm Bay Ken - 2008-09-24 11:05 AMAccording to the Virginian-Pilot, he was involved in a "cleaning evolution" (PC for field day?), and came in contact with the rudder ram.
I picked this up from another site: Field Day Accident - Open deck Plates. "... watchstander then camethrough the area and fell through the open floor. He landed by thehydraulic ram that operates the ship's rudder, and became stuck. He wassupposedly fine at this point, just stuck, as they called in theemergency report and ordered the rudder not to move. After thishowever, they told Control to move the rudder in one direction in orderto free the stuck sailor. Control accidently moved the rudder the otherway, crushing him instead. He was still pulled out, and lived foranother 4-5 hours before losing conciousness and pulse."
