Hey you guys from the sixties. Did you wear "Boondockers" or something else while working on the boats. I know the new Nukes were canvas deck shoes. I'm wondering what year that started.

On the boats I served on (all nukes) footwear was pretty much up to the individual (unless you had VIPs/ORSE/Hymie aboard). A-gangers and MMs aft mostly wore boom-dockers; I seem to remember whatever you wore had to have closed toes. Some wore sneakers, others woven-leather sandals, Wellingtons were popular. I think regulation for Sonar girls was 5 inch pumps.

Uniform of the day when on watch. Pretty much what you wanted off watch. Closed toes in all machinery spaces. Lots of guy wore sandals or bedroom slippers off watch.

Wellingtons below decks and really ugly, and cold in the winter, blue canvas deck shoes topside in my days as a deckape.
Gucci's after I became a Corpsman.

Wellingtons, 2 pair, one for the beach and inspections and a working pair for the boat. I must have had pair of shoes somewhere but I don't remember them.

On the 408 & 484 we wore whatever underway. We wore sandals in the engine rooms unless we were overhauling an engine. When the sitlls were running it would get so hot that the sweat would run down into your socks and shoe and athletes foot would near cripple you, so, we wore sandals. Now on the 617 & 626 I wore wellington's mostly just to piss off the brown shoe Navy.

While collecting stories for our Archerfish (AG/SS-311) archives, the following showed up in my mail box...

"I was asking around the boat to see if anyone had a piece of leather I could have to make a holder for my TL-29 pocket knife. Bush (Jim Blackburn) told me there was an old pair of leather Wellington boots in the after engine room that Pig (Ken Henry) had thrown away that I could have if I wanted them. I knew they had nice soft tops on them and were just what I was looking for so I told him “Sure!” Bush brought the boots back to maneuvering room for me and I cut them up to make my knife holder. They were perfect, except for one small problem, I found out after the fact that they were Pig's steaming boots and not something that had been tossed in the trash. I also realized that Bush knew it at the time he gave them to me.

Pig wasn’t too happy about the loss of his favorite boots, as replacement boots are near impossible to come by while out at sea on a submarine! He tried every trick he knew to find out what happened to those boots, but as far as I know he never did.

For the record, I wasn't about to tell him, and it would be a safe bet that Bush, who was his oiler, damn sure didn't tell him! I will say those boots sure did make a good knife holder; one that I carried for many years. Thanks for the use of your boots, Pig!" - Joseph R. (Frenchy) Deveau

Ha, shoes.....we had a certain American Commander on a 2-3 year posting to us here in Oz.

One day he called me into his office and was staring out the window...I immediately knew what his problem was.

He wanted to know why one of our Chief's was wearing sandals in his summer uniform on the base. my reply was "because he can Sir"

This didn't impress our American boss one little bit, "I don't agree with this" My thoughts and what came out of my mouth were two very different things altogether, but I politely informed him that he is legal to wear sandals with OUR uniform....and left his office. What a jerk, it would be the same as me coming over and telling you lot you cant wear 'x' article of clothing because I didn't like it...."phttttttt"!

and speaking of shoes as we are......I bought a pair of runners for Daniel yesterday, I take size 10 1/2 and he, at the age of 13 is wearing size........13. unbelievable!

Blue *_*

PS. You know what they say about guys with big feet don't you?

They wear big shoes!!

Wore Wellingtons untill we were officially on patrol then changed into sneakers or hush puppies. The Wellingtons had a composit sole so it held the deck as good as deck shoes line handeling during Manuvering Watch. Late 60's early 70's on the 619 and 608.

We were allowed to wear any type of footwear.

It was all about comfort to me.

I wore a pair of green Adidas running shoes.

as I remember on almost every boat I was on you were allowed to wear what you brung once the manevering watch was secured Most of the nukes wore Wellingtons or Dockers as Tennis shoes were to hard on the feet in heat, salt and oil. Remember most Coners wore any of the three

In my day, the Navy issued a thick leather high top black leather lace up shoe that looked like a sawed off paratrooper boot. The damn things had a sole of thick black rubber that was a composition tougher than rhino hide. Your toes were protected by a steel cap that was tougher than a tank turret. We called them MAMMY YOKUMS after an old tough as nails hillbilly honey who was a cartoon character on I believe Lil' Abner or Snuffy Smith...Nobody on any smokeboat I tossed my gear aboard, wore sneakers, jeezus sandals, flip-flops or ballet slippers. Everything on board a diesel fleet boat weighed enough to crush your foot, steel toed Mammy Yokums kept you from hobbling around the rest of your life with a crushed foot and no toes. They weren't much of a fashion statement but they sure as hell saved the "little piggies that went to market" when a doubler plate got loose and became "gear adrift" in a state five sea. DEX

Here's a picture of what the Rebel Navy was wearing for Topsiders in 1961. (The little sign that says me is pointing to Jack Hester who is rumored to have been the one who borrowed the flag before leaving Pasgagula. ) As I remember, they had the special soles on them that worked really well on wet decks. On the Scorpion, you pretty well wore what you wanted. I wore Nocono Black Cowboy Boots. They took a good shine for inspections.
