At random: USS R-6 was fitted the first prototype US submarine snorkel at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the closing months of the European part of WW II in April / May 1945 and successfully tested it off Fort Lauderdale, Fl. as the war against Japan ended in August 1945. The snorkel was removed from the USS R-6 and she was decommissioned and scrapped in September 1945.

HOLTZ, Arnold H. Ike, CAPT, USN, Ret., passed away on September 26, 2008, in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. He was 99 years old identified in August 2008, as one of the five oldest living graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy. Captain Holtz was born February 3, 1909, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, the son of the late George Holtz and Sophia Dickert Holtz. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1931 and was subsequently commissioned as ensign in the U.S. Navy. Following graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy, Captain Holtz served in battleships, destroyers, submarines, and amphibious ships. World War II service was spent in command of three different submarines the O6, the Tuna and the Baya. He was in command during eight submarine war patrols in all areas of the Pacific. His war time decorations include the Silver Star Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. Subsequent assignments were as Officer in Charge, Naval Torpedo Testing Range, Piney Point, Maryland; Submarine Division Commander; Student and Staff of the Naval War College; the Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Union (AKA 106); Assistant Chief of Staff of Administration to the Staff Commander Pacific Fleet; Chief of Staff to Commander Mine Force Atlantic Fleet; and Commander Charleston Group Atlantic Reserve Fleet. The last two assignments were here in the Charleston area. Advanced schooling was pursued at the Naval Post Graduate School and the Naval War College. He is a graduate of both of these institutions and served on the War College Staff for two years. He did additional post graduate work at the University of South Carolina and the University of Tennessee. Captain Holtz retired from the Navy with 30 years of service in 1961 and taught school for 13 years thereafter - the last 10 of which were spent at the Porter Gaud School as Head of the Department of Mathematics. A resident of Charleston for over 50 years, Captain Holtz was a member of the Charleston Ancient Artillery Society. Surviving are his widow, Rae Holtz of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his daughter Barbara Rae Kaiser of McLean, VA; and two granddaughters Lisa H. Kaiser of Alexandria, VA, and Elizabeth K. McIntyre of Washington, DC. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. Friends are invited to attend his memorial service at First Scots Presbyterian Church, where Captain Holtz was a member, at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2008. WISH, James Robert, CAPT, USN, Ret., died on September 24, 2008 in Atlantic Beach, Fl. Born January 4, 1922 in Beloit, Wisconsin, raised in Milwaukee, Captain Wish graduated from the Boy's Technical High School as Salutatorian, Class 1939, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943 as class of 1944. During WWII, he made 6 submarine war patrols in the Pacific [PLAICE & PUFFER] and was awarded the Silver Star Medal for "gallantry in action". After WW II, he graduated from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1949 with a Master of Science in Marine Engineering. For the remainder of his Naval career, Captain Wish was deeply involved in the design and development of nuclear-powered ballistic- missile submarines. He was selected to be the Navy representative in the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program, 1968-69. Captain Wish pursued a second career in Education, earning a Master of Science degree (Curriculum and Instruction) from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He taught Calculus, Physics and various science electives at the engineering college, Milwaukee School of Engineering. He and his wife Arlene moved to Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, FL (1991). There, he produced 40+ oil paintings and sang Bass in several Barber Shop quartets and choruses. Captain Wish is survived by his wife, Arlene (Fleet Landing); son, James Alan (Medway, Ma): daughters, Jennifer Ann Salles-Cunha, (Atlantic Beach, Fl); daughter, Jeannine Wish-Yeko, (Tampa Fl); son, Jonathan; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be held at 5:30pm on October 18, 2008 at The Holy Family by the Sea Church, Mayport Naval Station. GEORGE, Gordon Lee, 52, formerly of Beaumont, while living in Houston, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 22, 2008 at his residence. Gordon was born April 27, 1956 to Carl Lee and Mary Jane George in Beaumont and was a longtime member of the Church of Christ. He was a 1974 graduate of French High School, after which he attended the University of Texas at Austin where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Gordon was recruited by the Navy during his senior year at U.T. He chose the nuclear submarine service and went to officer candidate school in Rhode Island. After graduating as an Ensign, he went to several other Navy schools in New York, Florida, and Connecticut. He was finally deployed to San Diego where he served aboard the U.S.S. Pintado. During this tour he went to the North Pole. He served on several other fast attack boats and received many awards and commendations during his several tours, including the Navy's Navigator of the Year award. His last boat, The USS Houston, saw action in the Film The Hunt for Red October. Gordon was the driver during the famous Fly Dallas, Fly scene where the boat makes an emergency blow to surface. He achieved the rank of Lt. Commander before leaving the Military. Gordon left the service to work in the private sector. He held several jobs in different parts of the country. He held several high level supervisory jobs dealing with diverse concerns such as power generation and oil movement. He was employed with Mustang Engineering at the time of his death and was blessed with many fine and honorable colleagues. He is survived by his mother, Mary Jane George; brother, Gary Alan George; and two beloved nieces, Carla Jane George and Mattie Mae Neely. His father, Carl Lee George preceded him in death in 1994. Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 29, 2008 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A gathering of family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 28, 2008 at the Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, P.O.
