At random: ENS Sam Hunter, the first submarine casualty of WWII on Dec. 8, 1941. He was attached to Sea Dragon moored next to Sealion. He was killed by shrapnel from the first bomb hit on Sealion penetrating the conning tower of Sea Dragon. The second hit killed 4 men in Sealions Engineroom.

GENTILE, Michael Allen, Machinist's Mate 3rd Class (SS), USN, 21, stationed at NSSC Bangor, Washington, was killed in a tragic accident aboard the ballistic-missile submarine USS Nebraska (SSBN-739) near Oahu, Hawaii, on Saturday, September 20, 2008. He was born February 19, 1987, in Waterville, NY the son of Julie and Jay Gentile. Michael attended schools in Fairfield and Watertown, N.Y. He graduated in 2005 from Lawrence High School as an honor student. Michael enlisted in the United States Navy on July 5, 2005. He was a member of the Blue Crew and had been assigned to the Kitsap, a Washington-based submarine, since Nov. 15, 2006. Petty Officer Gentile had previously served onboard the ballistic-missile submarine USS Alaska. MM3 (SS) Gentile loved the Navy and what he did; he was planning to re-enlist next year. Surviving are his mother, Julie Gentile; his father, Jay Gentile and wife, Michelle; four brothers, Jeremy Gentile, Dalton Patterson, Theodore Smith Jr. and Kevin Eastler; two sisters, Tracy Young and Kelly Eastler; grandmothers, Nancy Decca, Virginia Spalding and Katherine Gentile. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m., with a funeral service to begin at 6 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St. in Fairfield. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2 at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road in Augusta. HEASLEY, James H. "Jim", 61, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield was Called Safely Home on Friday, Se ptember 26, 2008 surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania on October 18, 1946, son of the late Eugene and Margaret (Kemerer) Heasley. He was raised in Jeannette, Pennsylvania and enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He served aboard the United States Submarine Alexander Hamilton and attained the rank of Machinist Mate Second Class. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Polaris Deterrent Insignia. Following his military service, he moved to the Hungry Hill section of Springfield in 1970. He was employed as a sales representative for 23 years at the former Taplin Pump and Compressor Company in West Springfield and later at the former Atlas Copco Company in Holyoke. He became an independent sales representative for air pumps and compressors and formed the Heasley Associates in Springfield. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield where he served his parish on many committees including the Shamrock Festival and the Pancake Breakfast Committee. He was a longtime member of the Marconi Club in Springfield where he was instrumental in establishing their Scholarship Fund. He was also a former Scout Master for the Boy Scout Troop 51 at Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield. He leaves his beloved wife, Maureen A. (Davis) Heasley. They were married at the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel in Springfield and were blessed with over 40 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving children, Chad A. Heasley and his wife, Cynthia of Mt. Juliet, TN, Carrie A. Marino and her husband, Brandon of Agawam and Cynthia H. Card and her husband, James of East Longmeadow. His ten cherished grandchildren, Daniel, Julieanna, Christopher, Kalyn, Justin, Jessica, Alexander, Zachary, Lauren and Caitlin. His cherished great-granddaughter, Nevaeh. His dear brothers-in-law, Marc L. Davis and his wife, Mary-Jane of South Hadley and Stephen Davis of East Longmeadow. His dear sister-in-law, Shirley Heasley of Mifflinburg, PA and his many dear nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his dear brother, Rev. Glenn Heasley who was Called Home in 2001. His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, October 1, 2008 at 8:45 a.m. from the St. Pierre Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, 7 Chapin Terrace at the corner of Chestnut Street (near Baystate Medical Center) in Springfield followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Hope Church, Armory Street in Springfield. His burial will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery on Hampden Street in Chicopee. His family will receive friends at the funeral home in the Chapin Chapel on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Arthritis Foundation, Chatham Center, Suite 450, 29 Crafts Street, Newton, MA 02458-1287.
