DOHERTY, James V., 87, of Loves Park, IL died Tuesday, September 30, 2008, in Provena Cor Mariae Center. Born June 1, 1921, in Rockford, the son of Ray and Vera (Casserly) Doherty. Veteran of World War II, serving in the US Navy aboard the submarine USS Bluegill (SS-242). Married Jeannette Davis on April 30, 1946, in Rockford; she died Feb. 6, 1986. Employed by Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 23 for 50 years, retiring in 1983. Member of Cathedral of St. Peter. Survivors include daughters, Martha Doherty of Rockford and Amy (Douglas) Resenbeck of Loves Park; sons, Gary (Jeanine) of LaCrosse and Mark (Louise) Doherty of Rockford; grandchildren, James and Justin Henderson, Colin, Emily, Nick, Tom, Teresa and Lucy Doherty; great-grandchildren, Steven, Brendon, Austin and Emily Henderson; brother, Tom (Phyllis) Doherty; sister, Anne (Bob) Zanocco; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Margaret Johnson. Predeceased by parents; sister, Mary Valencia; brothers, Gerry, Don and David Doherty; and great-granddaughter, Tabitha Henderson. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, in Cathedral of St. Peter, Father Kevin Butler will officiate. Burial in Willwood Burial Park. ROGERS, Philip B., 87, died in Tarzana, CA March 16, 2008. He was born in Honolulu, HI June 14 1921, graduated from Maryknoll High School in Honolulu in 1940, and enlisted in the US Navy December 5, 1940. He was aboard the USS Keosanqua (AT-38) the morning of December 7, 1941, taking over a tow from USS Antares (AG-10) southwest of the entrance to Pearl Harbor when the infamous Japanese raid began. While being bombed and strafed by enemy aircraft, she completed the transfer of the tow and proceeded to Honolulu unharmed. Following submarine school, Philip was assigned to Relief Crew 16 at Pearl Harbor and then to USS Jack (SS-259) for the 2nd and 3rd War Patrols. He had a couple of months in a Relief Crew at Fremantle before returning to New London and commissioning crew of USS Bugara (SS-331). He made all three War Patrols aboard Bugara before the war ended. He was discharged in late 1945 as EM2(SS). He was a Life Member of the San Francisco Chapter, Submarine Veterans of World War II.
