Ron (Warshot) Smith had me research some photos for him awhile back, see if you can fill in the who, what, why, where and when to this daily picture - answer(s) if needed tomorrow... - - - - - - Ah yes, yesterday's daily picture... Mr. Sakamaki, was indeed one of the five midget submarine pilots launched off the shore of Oahu on the early morning on December 7th 1941. From the start he had a defective gyro compass in his midget sub but still made it close to Pearl Harbor before running aground twice. The battery fumes eventually knocked he and his 2nd out. The sub was carried around the south end of Oahu by the currents and ran aground on an off-shore reef. After reviving the two tried to swim to shore, Sakamaki made it and became the first Japanese prisoner of war, his 2nd drowned trying to get to the beach. Needless to say that Mr. Sakamaki was shunned by the Japanese war machine, but did live a long life working with a major company in Brazil after the war... His submarine (the HA-19) was towed around the country in the war bond effort and literally helped win the war by the selling of so many war bonds attributable to it's being visited by the American public.
