At random: John Philip Holland built several submarines before the USS Holland, which became the first undersea craft commissioned by the U.S. Navy. The Holland was purchased on April 11, 1900 for a price of $150,000. It was commissioned into the US Navy on October 12, 1900.

Subject: My Primary Base, Northern Virginia is GREAT

After reading all the posts, and e-mails, I got on making what I considered a rather inconsequential suggestion, I came to recognize what an outstanding Base we truly have and how meaningful we have made induction into the HOLLAND CLUB...I see now that our membership has turned the passage into the Holland Club ranks something far more valuable than it was originally intended to be. I found that many bases don't even submit names for inclusion...and most just mention member acceptance as a simple "new business" announcement at their monthy general membership meeting. Reading that and the posts based on a sort of "who cares?" attitude, I gained a lot of respect for the leadership of my NOVA BASE that has single handedly created our HOLLAND CLUB induction and turned it into the premier event of our year.......a real class act. Husband's and wives look forward to the wonderful evening our HOLLAND CLUB DINNER has become. Our Base has created its' own terriffic HOLLAND CLUB certificate that has that great photographic representation of John Holland popping up out of a hatch wearing his bowler hat, Dolphins (officer or raghat as appropriate), a color image of the HOLLAND CLUB logo.....All the inductees particulars... name, rate, name and hull number of his qual boat....and a great fore and aft image of his qual boat in its' configuration at the time the lad got his Dolphins pinned on...The certificate is professionally matted and framed and is something any submarine veteran would be proud to to hang on the wall. The more I read of other bases, the more I realize how lucky I am to have dropped anchor where I have. My late bride loved the Base...she always looked forward to attending the monthly meetings and mess cooking running hot coffee and serving doughnuts we would pick up....She ordered one of those large USSVI logo jacket patches and created a "long green" tablecloth for the officers headtable...The long wardroom tablecloth covers the entire offricers table and has that USSVI logo patch sewn in the center of the overhanging skirt...I can remember the smile she had the whole time she sat at a card table with her sewing machine turning out that rascal....I will confess, at meetings since her death, I will look at that table cover and get an unrecognized lump in my throat. That happens when you miss someone....NOVA has pirate auctions, raffles, a fifty-fifty, and other great and usually funny as hell, events to support our absolutely wonderful HOLLAND CLUB DINNER....Other organizations would do well to copy some of the traditions we've created...but Hey, I have no dog in that fight and don't need all the negative feedback from sailors who are indifferent and could care less. You are shortchanging yourself and are missing an absolutely wonderful time...But how can you miss something you've never experienced....I've never spent the night with Meg Ryan so I don't miss it....DEX

The Texas Beagle Doctor, already HAS a lovely lady...(With Doc's reputation he had to go halfway around the world to find a wonderful lady to put up with him. But, then so did I...only I went counter clockwise and found my lovely lady living in a tree in Hedmark). No the Beagle Doc doesn't have Meg Ryan in his basement because the hurricane moved his basement to Oklahoma City.) And, in the future please warn me that you are about to post a photo of my midnight fantasy sweetheart...so I can go get my jumper cables to restart my heart....Don't just have me scroll down and have her appear...I don't have one of those, "I've fallen and can't get up" Medic-Alert contraptions and I just laid in the floor yelling "Elisabeth, this' izz the big one....I'm coming." I have a soccer ball size Livitra pill and a pile of hen egg size Viagra by the front door, in case Meg shows up in response to my,"Stop by for a quickie" billboard, I put up on I-95. Thanks DEX
