Nice pic., Chief. What is the other tender tied up on the quay wall? And I don't remember pier guards in the early '60's. Musta been a hot watch in summer on that concrete. Course i reckon someone gotta keep all those crackpots on the Conk train from attacking the boats. LOL |

I believe I took that pix late 1962 or early 1963 when I was assigned to USS Chopper. |

on our very own USS Chopper Website.
Still a good Picture, Thanks John.

If you notice way down on pier one the boat with the sun shade, it is the Balao. I was aboard when they made it in early 1963 as we spent so much time tied to the pier getting ready for de-com. The pier guards were a result of the Cuban Crises and yes it was hot out there. All you could think about was the Gate Bar and cold beer. Really cold beer.
Pat and I were the topside watches for our respective boats the morning the Cuban Crises broke. I think we were on one side of pier three and Pat was on the other side. I don't think we really knew each other than to say, "What the f... is going on?".
Great memories from those days of our mis-spent youth. Thanks John.

Geese, this old age sucks. Tim you know I was on that 4-8 watchin late Oct, '62 too, on the 403 boat, but I sure don't remember pier watches later. I was NQP then, so I should have pulled some of those watches. Oh well, as long as there are youngins like yourself to refresh my memory, I reckon I'll be OK.

Hey guys! (especially Pat), don't forget that these pictures are archieved on my box and in most cases I have no idea from where they came, BUT in this case "Thank You Pat" and as to the date (?) I looked at the cars (????) - I didn't report to the T fin (first) down there until '65 so this obviously predates that. The quay wall tender had to be the one the Bushnell relieved - o.k. guys - who was it??? |

Wasn't the Gilmore in Key West before relocating to Charleston? It might have been before the time frame mentioned above (62-63).
Several tenders operated in the Caribbean from time to time and it wouldn't have been unusual for one to stop in Key West while in the area.
