At random: Interests in submarines extends to royalty and presidents. The King of England and the King and Queen of Spain are among those who have made submerged cruises in submarines. As a result of a trip in an early United States submarine, President "Teddy" Roosevelt ordered extra compensation for personnel serving in the "Silent Service." President Harry Truman made a 440 foot dive in a captured German submarine. The first President to cruise aboard a nuclear submarine was President Eisenhower who rode the USS SEAWOLF out of Newport, Rhode Island on September 26, 1957.

CAETER, Michael Andrew, 69, of Solana Road, passed away Monday, October 13, 2008, at Carlsbad Medical Center. He was born June 19, 1939, to Edmund Patrick and Ruby Elizabeth (Jenkins) Carter in Oak Creek, CO. At the outbreak of World War II, Michael and his family moved to Vancouver, Wash., where he was raised. After graduation from high school in 1957, Michael enlisted in the US Navy and qualified for submarine service, serving on the USS Trout (SS-566) and the nuclear powered USS Scamp (SSN-588). This experience and training not only allowed him the opportunity to make the many friends whom he valued throughout his life, but to get involved in a career path that was both exciting and rewarding. In 1958, the possibilities of nuclear power were endless. Michael was a nuclear engineer. In the early 1960s, Michael met the love of his life, Patricia Witters, and made her his wife on May 10, 1963, in Reno, Nev. After a few years of marriage, extended submarine deployments became unacceptable and Michael chose to leave the Navy in 1966, and pursue a career in nuclear energy. He utilized his engineering background at WIPP, retiring in 2004. He spent his time fishing, traveling in his RV and with his shipmates. He loved and was loved by his wife Patricia, children, Stacy and Robert, grandchildren, mother, sisters, brothers and their spouses, many friends and shipmates. He is preceded in death by his father, Edmund Patrick. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Hillcrest Baptist Church. Military Honors will performed by the Carlsbad Veterans' Honor Guard. The Rev. John Hinze, pastor of Hillcrest Baptist Church, will be officiating. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. West Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Brink, Doyle Schwartz, Captain Adkins, Lou Ross, Ed Feury and Larry Patterson.

As always, with gratitude for service in protecting our country's freedoms.

Suspect Caeter had a hand in writing his obit. Perhaps a reminder to those who have yet to do so?
