At random: "I saw the submariners, the way they stood aloof and silent, watching their pigboat with loving eyes. They are alone in the Navy. I admired the PT boys. And I often wondered how the aviators had the courage to go out day after day and I forgave their boasting. But the submariners! In the entire fleet they stand apart!” -- James Michener

ODE TO JACK

I JOINED IN THE DAYS, WHEN BEING A JACK WAS FUN,
HE'D STEP IN DB’S AND LEVI'S, FOR ANOTHER GREAT RUN.
A SEIKO ON HIS WRIST AND WINNEYS IN HIS POCKET
ADRIFT THE NEXT MORNING, AND THEN ANOTHER HUGE ROCKET.

A FEW BEERS DOWN AT ROCKERS, THEN UP THE s**t-FIGHT.
ACROSS TO TT’S, VR’S TO FINISH THE NIGHT.
STAGGER DOWN MCLEAY, TO A PIZZA AT PETE'S
A MAGGOTTY AT HARRY’S, THE NIGHT WAS COMPLETE.

NEXT DAY BACK ONBOARD, WITH A HEAD THAT WAS SORE,
HE’D OPEN HIS WALLET AND CHECK OUT THE SCORE.
HE REMEMBERS LAST NIGHT, AS STANDEASY COMES ROUND
IN THE MESS WITH A BREW THE WARRIES ABOUND.

HE WOULD STEP WITH MESSMATES, A FINE BUNCH OF JACKS
THEY’D PROTECT EACH OTHER, WATCH EACH OTHER’S BACKS.
HE DIDN’T NEED R.A., NO NEED FOR A WIFE
WITH SO MANY MATES, HE LOVED HIS MESS LIFE.

THE FUN OUT AT SEA, GAMES NIGHTS AND THE LIKE.
BOXING ON THE UPPERS OR A MELBOURNE CUP NIGHT.
WHEN CROSSING THE LINE, THE BEARS, THEY WOULD HUNT
NO BITCHING FROM JACK, WITH SUMP IN HIS RUMP

HE’D SAIL OFF TO ASIA AS ONE OF OUR BEST.
AFTER A NIGHT OUT IN HONKERS, HAVE TAT’S ON HIS CHEST.
THEN OVER TO SUBIC, AND OFF TO MANILLA.
DOWN ROXAS BOULLIVARD, LIFE WAS QUITE A THRILLER.

HE RUN DOWN THE ‘WANG, EAT A CRAB WITH OLD MOE.
DRINK BOTTLES OF ANCHOR, ON THE WANG PATIO.
THEN THUNDER TO TOWN, AS THE NIGHT WEREN’T COMPLETE.
TILL HE DID THE FLAMERS, AND SAW THE SUNRISE ON BUGIS STREET.

OR HE’D DEPLOY TO THE I.O., TO WORK WITH THE YANKS.
GO ASHORE IN MOMBASSA, PLAY SOME "SUNSHINE BAR" PRANKS.
HE’D VISIT INDIA AND CEYLON, BUT SEYCHELLES WAS BEST.
THE EUROPEAN TOURIST, SHOWING HIM HER BARE CHEST.

HE STAYED OUT OF TROUBLE, GOT PROMOTED THROUGH THE RANKS,
COMMISSIONED AN FFG, HAD FUN WITH THE YANKS.
HE GOT DRUNK IN TIJUANA, TOURED UP THE WEST COAST,
BUT VEGAS WAS THE PLACE, THAT HE LOVED THE MOST.

THE GULF WAR CAME ALONG, AND D.C. WAS NOW BACK,
PROBANS AND STEEL CAPS, NO MORE SANDALS FOR JACK.
THEN FEMALES AT SEA, TIME TO ADJUST HIS DEMEANOUR.
HE’S NO LONGER LOOKED AFTER BY THOSE THAT ARE SENIOR

THEN HE HAD REVIEWS, TTP, SCRS, RAN-CIS AND SCRIT
I DON'T THINK THERE'S A JACK, NOT AFFECTED A BIT.
WHEN WILL THEY STOP, AND LEAVE POOR JACK ALONE.
YEARS FROM NOW, DO THEY THEN WANT A CLONE?

THE TIMES, THEY'RE A CHANGIN’, NOW WE’RE POLITICALLY CORRECT.
THE JACK DEAR TO US, IS VIRTUALLY WRECKED.
HE CAN'T WATCH HIS BLUEYS, OR SPIN WARRIES IN HIS MESS,
CAN’T SWEAR WHEN IN PUBLIC, OR DRINK TO EXCESS.

JACK’LL SOON BE A MEMORY, TO BRING OUT ONCE A YEAR.
TO MARCH ON ANZAC DAY, AND ACKNOWLEDGE THE CHEERS.
HE’LL STILL SPIN HIS WARRIES, ADD A BIT TO EACH TALE.
TO ENSURE TO HIS LISTENERS, THAT THEY NEVER BECOME STALE.

BUT DON’T FEEL DESPONDENT, PLEASE DON’T DESPAIR.
‘CAUSE I AM JACK STILL INSIDE, AND I REALLY DO CARE!
I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH, AND FEEL PRIVILEGED TO SAY.
I WAS AN AUSTRALIAN JACK, AND I WON'T FADE AWAY.

Nice, Blue! And I think I got about 90% of the RAN argot correctly.
Or maybe not.

Somewhere in the years since I served there has been a sea change in the service I thought I knew...You piece refers to the old days I lived through. Thanks DEX

Dex, not only you, but others as well I am sure would have loved the way we operated on the O Boats. It was all about 'fun and hard work'.

Talking with one of my shipmates who has recently retired, said, "The big difference between O Boats and the new Collins Class Boats was they removed ALL of the fun"

Probably another reason why they can only just man 3 submarines compared to 6 of yesteryear.
