At random: The USS NAUTILUS SSN 571 steamed 60,000 miles on a lump of Uranium the size of a golf ball. A diesel powered submarine would have required 3,000,000 gallons or 300 railway tank cars of oil.

Francis P Wines was the QM LPO on Seadragon in 1960 for our east-to-west transit via the Pole. He was a whup-ass no-nonsense A-Nav but he was easily approachable when you asked a qual question. I met him a few times after he retired in the NLON area, but lost track until I read his obit. He was a fine man.

As for feelings - I'm off chemo and doing great.. thanks for asking.

My memories of him are similar to yours. He taught me things that I still use today.
