At random: The first periscope used by the United States Navy was not built for a submarine. The ironclad monitor OSAGE utilized a periscope to discover a Confederate cavalry unit taking cover behind the high banks of the Red River in Arkansas.

I had one. Was issued to me in boot camp 1952. Wore it one full winter in Naples, Italy. It was the uniform of the day when I was on shore duty there with CINCSOUTH, 1952 OR 53. Misplaced it many years ago. Gone but not forgotten.

Dex, mine sits on my bookcase in my puter room. Issued on Sept. 8, 1958, now 50+ years ago. My initials are on the inside of the hatband. FDP, does that stand for f...ing DUMB Pr..k? I think it did then. FredP

Steamboat: Were you referring to a "green barrais"? Think it's spelled "beret." Anyway, my dictionary tells me that a beret is a round flattish visorless cap of felt or cloth.

Missed my calling. Shoulda been an English teacher.

And Ralph: Deposits of WHAT in your flat hats?

Gonna ask Patti to post a couple pics of a really good-looking sailor in a flat hat.

Soon!

I got one in Great Lakes Boot Camp March 1963. I never got to wear it since the only place it was authorized was Boston area. At least that's the way I remember it. I really wanted to wear it as it looked classy when worn the right way.

I separated the two photos that you sent together and tried to adjust one of the a bit so you could see the hat.  Hope you approve.

What kind of car was in the two pictures of Elmer? It was his car - whatever it was. Notice those "suicide" front doors.

Cora the car is a 1935 Chevy. I'm a Hot Rod nut and I've seen a few of these old Chevy Masters around the shows. The 32 Ford V8 also had suicide doors but Elmer's car was a 35 Chevy. I have a Kit Car 32 Ford 5 window coupe and it has "Normal" doors... but a suicide flathead V8

I also noticed he had a steel wheel on the front and a spoker wheel on the rear??? maybe the spoker was his spare.

I bet most people thought the Japanese invented "Suicide" doors.. Instead of doors they call them hari karis..You may be able to get them on your next Toyota or Honda... Banzai!!!!!
I am an " ex" old school Democrate and I only buy American Iron. Yup even those Blue Oval cars that are half made or assembled in Mexico and Canada..to me anyway it's still Detroit Iron.

Smiley, take a second closer look at those two wheels. The front wheel is turned slightly, so the angle of the shadows is different from the rear. Dollars to donuts they are the same. A real spoker "wood" be quite different.

Bonnie and Clyde got killed in a 32 Ford. It's at the Whiskey Pete's Casino at Primm Valley, NV.

"We would go to Bud's Pool Hall on St. Joe Street after work and have a few. Then we would race around the city to see if we could ditch each other. Scotty would never admit that I was a better driver than he was. One time I lost him on West Boulevarad. He spun out completely. I could see his lights in the mirror. I went back to see if he was okay. He was immediately on my tail again as if nothing had happened. It's a wonder we didn't kill ourseves. We both had 1935 Fords with flathead V-8s. Powerful cars for the time. About 95 horsepower. That doesn't seem like much now, but at that time it was a bomb."

Smiley, are you sure that the car in the pictures is a Chevy?

By the way: our mother had a little visit with "Bud," and Elmer was not allowed back in the Pool Hall after she discovered that her eighteen-year-old son was going in there and "having a few." He was still angry about this sixty years later.

Cora if I remember correctly the only suicide door "American coupes" were the 35 Chevy and the 32 Ford.. Other cars had them like Packards and Cords but this is a coupe or sedan body car. This is not a Ford.... I am pretty certain it's a 35 Chevy Master..The fenders and hoodline give it away as well as those wheels. I work with a friend who lives and breaths old cars I'll check with him.
