At random: "Submariners are a special brotherhood, either all come to the surface or no one does. On a submarine, the phrase all for one and one for all is not just a slogan, but reality.” -- VADM Rudolf Golosov of the Russian Navy

I still have my original issue (8/61), but never have worn it.

I think they eliminated them from the sea bag in April of 1963.

My brother did; had it when he came home on leave after boot camp. He wanted me to help him find it so that he could take it to the one-and-only Sterlet reunion that he attended, but we were unable to locate it then. His daughter found it along with his dress blue uniform after he died. It will soon go in our local museum along with the uniform.

I was issued one in Boot Camp Aug 59 Glakes. Have no idea what may have happened to it. Never wore it that I can recall. It was something like what The COB told me one time. He said that you NQP'S "Matter" because matter has weight and occupies space and thats the only Damned thing you are good for. The flathat had weight and occupied space so I guess I tossed it out.

Had one in my seabag in June '60.  It was too small so I never wore it.  Don't have a clue where it is now.

I still have mine, issued at RTC San Diego in July 62. They were just getting rid of things, I think; it never did fit me ... way too small ... but it was never uniform of the day, so no biggie. Still have it in my memento drawer.

Jan 62 issued one and never wore it. I think they were issuing them just to get rid of them.
My brother in law tells of being stationed at Elizabeth City and the CO of the base decided to get rid of them from the ships store. How to do this without throwing them away?
Simple,,,, uniform for next inspection Flat Hats.
Poor Swabbies that had thrown thiers away, lining up at the ships store to buy new ones for the inspection.
Almost all were sold and of course never to be worn again.
Officers like that should be flogged, keel hauled, hung and then cremated and have the urn used as a urinal at the EM club .
Moths ate mine its long gone

FLAT HATS--First authorized in 1852 the flat hat was eliminated on 1 April 1963 due to non-available materials. The original hats had unit names on the front, however, unit names were taken off in January 1941.

I got one in my initial issue in 1959....At the time, they were required to be worn at the Boston Navy Yard...I think it had something to do with the USS CONSTITUTION being berthed in Boston. Maybe someone with better knowledge could clarify that. I once saw Morning Colors executed on a light cruiser in Halifax and the two bluejackets who ran the colors up on the fantail, wore flathats, white pistol belts and white leggings...They looked sharp. By the way, that hat being worn by the Village People isn't a flathat...it's a raghat. DEX

ET"A" School, Great Lakes, 1955
The Flat Hat was part of the required liberty uniform for non-rated folks (I was an E-3), and we could not wear civies through the gate. Riding your thumb was a preferred mode of travel then and several SSC students were struck by cars while hitch-hiking that winter. It was pretty hard to see us with the black gloves, P-coat collar turned up, and flat hat. I think that might have had something to do with getting rid of the flat hat.

I was issued one with my seagag in March 1960 at Great Lakes. We were told then that we would never wear them except at a funeral (they never did explain if it would be ours or someone elses funeral). No matter though, cause nobody died while I was aboard. Ain't got a clue what happened to mine, too many ships, too many brothers and nieces that pilfered what I brought home after 5 years in the Navy, nothing left now but a moth-eaten pea-coat.
Ya know, come to think of it, flat hats aren't too much different from the barrais (sp) that the Army wears today!

As Jon put it so nice in his post above--that is exactly what happened to my "flat hat". Four of us had a "snake ranch" out on Isle of Palms and at one of our parties, low and behold, there were all 4 flat hats lined up on the porch with deposits placed in them. Don't know who or why but it was a hoot to see that in the morning after.

Gary, does that "flat hat" mean you're a dickhead? Cheers, mate!
