At random: ENS Sam Hunter, the first submarine casualty of WWII on Dec. 8, 1941. He was attached to Sea Dragon moored next to Sealion. He was killed by shrapnel from the first bomb hit on Sealion penetrating the conning tower of Sea Dragon. The second hit killed 4 men in Sealions Engineroom.

HOFFSES, Gary Whitman, 70, of Government St., Kittery, ME, died Thursday, October 30, 2008, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a period of declining health. Born March 8, 1938, in Cumberland, he was the son of Ernest and Marjorie (Dunn) Hoffses. He moved at an early age with his parents to Eliot, where he attended local schools and graduated from Eliot High School with the class of 1956. After high school he served in the US Navy. He attended submarine school in Connecticut and served aboard the USS Sea Owl for a number of years. He enjoyed many foreign ports, including Turkey. He is survived by his former wife, Sandra (Young) Hoffses of Kittery; their daughter, Jodi and her husband Zeke Morrel of Kittery; their sons, Greg Hoffses of Kittery and Corey Hoffses of Florida; their grandchildren, Mellanie Gordon, Nathan Shirley, Paige Hoffses, Greg Hoffses Jr., Angela Hoffses and Chelsea Danforth; their great-grandchildren, Wyatt Gordon and Mason and Micah desBouvrie; his sisters, Penny Grogan and her husband Reeves of Texas and Cindy Saklad and her husband Rich of Eliot; and his brother, James Hoffses of Kittery. Following his time in the US. Navy, he settled in Kittery, starting a family with his wife, Sandra (Young) Hoffses. A talented craftsman, Gary worked as a sail maker at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the sail loft. His talent upholstering took him to several shops in the Seacoast area, including Ben's Autobody. He was passionate about his cars, keeping them in good order, especially his Mustangs. He was a great cook and possessed a deep faith in God. A memorial service will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery 03904. Friends may visit with Gary's family from 6 to 7 p.m. before the service at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

GLIEB, Richard E. “Dick”, 59, of Kenton, Ohio, died Thursday, October 30, 2008, at his home. He was born September 16, 1949, in Kenton, Ohio. He was a 1967 graduate of Kenton High School and graduated with honors from Ivy Tech in Sellersburg after retirement. He served in the US Air Force for four years and the US Navy for 16 years. After attending Hospital Corp School, he qualified as an EMT Tech., Submarine Corpman and Independent Duty Corpman. He earned a Good Conduct Medal, was a medical consultant for the Marine Corp recruits in Louisville and retired with 20 years of military service. He was awarded the Kentucky Colonel in 1988 and was a member of V.F.W., lifetime member of AMVETS Post 1994 and a past American Legion member. Survivors include his wife, Norma Marie Hogue Gliebe; his parents, John and Audrey Gliebe, Kenton, Ohio; three daughters, Christina “Tina” Woodward and husband, Kenny, Clarksville, Elizabeth “Beth” Hughes and Sherman Lewis, Jeffersonville and Laura Gliebe and Brandon Darby, Jeffersonville; a son, Rhylie Armes, Kenton, Ohio; stepdaughter, Shannon Perkins, Jumbo; stepson, Matt Triplett and April Tillman, Kenton; 13 grandchildren, Dakota and A.J. Bostock, Lauren and Johnathon Woodward, Madison and Tyler Hughes, Brandon Lewis, Branden Gliebe, Julian Kaltofen, Emma Darby, Tyler Triplett, Shantona Morrissey and John Morrissey; one great-grandchild, Payton Armes; a sister, Jennifer Stayman and husband, Lonnie, Kenton; two brothers, Steven Gliebe and wife, Mary Ann, Kenton and Terry Lee Gliebe, Lima, Ohio; grandmother, Alverda Dunson, Findlay, Ohio; four nieces; and three nephews. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, at Schindewolf Stevens Stout Funeral Home, 200 E. Columbus St., Kenton, Ohio, with burial in Grove Cemetery in Kenton. Visitation at the funeral home will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday.The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Hardin County Hospice.
