Nov. 8th is the day set for the Veterans Day Parades, picnics, beach blasts, etc. See my fly isn't unziped ---yet--or shoes untied. I do run with scissors though.

Great Sage of the Sea Posts: 597 Location: Tucson, Arizona | Subject: RE: A Gentile Reminder TO ALL BDYS ON NOV 8TH I know that all of us that have birthdays on November 8th not only will help Vets know it is our weekend to show the world who we are (I have flown my USSVI LARGE FLAG BELOW MY US FLAG FOR WEEKEND). We then will follow it up with wearing our flag pins, vests, and letting the world know we are not only proud submariners but AMERICANS. I sent Lt Col Oliver North thanks to Bear "The Best Marine is a Submarine" for he and his wife Betsy (of course her's is in pink for breast cancer awareness) - as they honor him in Branson Aero Engineering caps will be put on his Marine Noggin -- know he will take it in great stride. Great to have born born with so many of you on the same day (we had great thinking daddies 9 months before) --- HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL CELEBRATING ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 8TH GREENBOARD SKI

COMSUBBBS Posts: 3202 Location: Alexandria, Virginia | Subject: Original term ARMISTICE DAY...Not Veteran's Day The proper term is ARMISTICE DAY....It was established in Great Britain by the Brits to honor their WWI dead...The British marked the Armistice that ended WWI...The time set for the cessation of hostilities was the 11th Month (November)....the 11th Day....the 11th Hour and 11th minutes....The Brits also developed the use of Buddy Poppies as the symbol to represent their war dead....WHY, because after the War the fields where the mutilated, and dismembered unidentifiable British dead lay in in the heavy artillery churned mud gumbo...after the War, the soil brought forth crimson poppies as the poem goes..."row on row"....Many Brits resent our adoption of their poppy symbol...They treat it with the highest dignity...If you see the Prime Minister attend his weekly Parlimentary Question Session, you will see that every member of Parliment is wearing a Buddy Poppy.....All of their poppies are made by war wounded vets....Ours used to be....I bought one from a young teenage girl outside a grocery store, who had no idea what they represented or...get this...who fought World War I..."Did it have anything to do with the Confederates?" I went to DSEA School in Gosport (HMS Dolphin) and was there for ARMISTICE DAY...It was filled with very touching remembrance....Americans toss a few coins in a styrofoam cup because, "It shows I like stuff veterans do for us." Certain things should remain as intended and not moved around for national convenience...November 8th has no significance to anyone except parade planners, fire station fish fry's and sonuvabitches who have no bloody idea how Great Britain sacrificed a generation of its' manhood fighting damn near alone to support the French in stopping Imperial Germany. The U.S. didn't enter the War until 1918...when Brits had been fighting like hell for three years. Then they create what they see as a sacred day, symbolized by their Buddy lapel poppie....and then we highjack their symbol as a VFW fundraiser and "modify" the date for convenience. When I was a kid...Tennessee, known as the VOLUNTEER STATE because of the high percentage of lads from Tennessee who "volunteer" to fight their country's wars...TENNESSEE celebrated Armistice Day (aka Arbor Day...where elementary school children planted a tree on the school house lawn and church property)....It was ALWAYS a state wide HOLIDAY and U.S. flags were placed on the graves of the Tennessee WWI dead by Boy Scouts. If we can move ARMISTICE DAY to November 8th....How bout moving Jesus's birthday to the day after July 4th when the swimming pools are still open and the beach concessions are still going strong and you can buy Nathan's hot dogs and saltwaqter taffy....How bout Easter? you could include it too...maybe on the 6th....Just think, you could have fresh corn on the cob to go with your chocolate bunnies and devilled eggs made with all those colored boiled eggs. ARMISTICE DAY shouldn't be subject to the kind bulls**t it has been subjected to in this country...a lot of damn fine young men ended up as poppy fertilizer in the soil of France and deserve the honor intended by the creation of the day.....I'm crawling down from the soap box now...just wanted to toss in my two cents worth in that styofoam cup that stupid girl poked at me.
