BROWN, George, 85, El Cajon physician, died September 12, 2008, after a long illness. In 1941, he was recruited by the Naval Academy to play football. He graduated in 1944 as a member of the class of '45. The Academy accelerated the four year program to three years during World War II. He served on the ill-fated USS Indianapolis until he was accepted into submarine school. He hoped to see more action in submarine service. However, before he graduated from submarine school in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the War had ended and the stark tragedy of the Indianapolis had occurred. After serving in submarines for three years he resigned from the Navy to attend medical school at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. Four years later he reentered the Navy for his internship. He started his private practice in 1954. During those years, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He enjoyed being the doctor for San Diego State football team for 15 years. He founded a free medical clinic at the City Rescue Mission in downtown San Diego and flew medical missions to Mexico. His sister, Martha Mitchell, formerly of San Diego, her two daughters, Sharon Seykota and Carol Sargent, survive him. His sister Pat Boone's three children, Bob Boone, Rod Boone and Terry Strandemo, as well as his sister Bette's two daughters, Vikki Auth and Kristi Benson of New Mexico, and his wife of 63 years and their children also survive him.

CHERLAND Sr., Derek D., 60, passed away October 29, 2008. Born on July 30, 1948 in Minnesota, Derek moved with his family to El Centro in the late 50's. He attended Central Union High School, served as a submariner in the U.S. Navy, and returned to El Centro in the early 70s working at Ameron Wire & Steel, where his coworkers elected him President of the local Steelworkers Union. Following Ameron's closure in 1974, Derek spent 16 years as an Instrument Technician at the Imperial Irrigation District Steam Generation Plant. During that period, Derek was a member of the IBEW local 569, and volunteered time with El Centro Pop Warner football. Derek spent his final years in the Jacumba area. He enjoyed his sons, friends, camping (as one of the founding members of SPAM), barbeques, and art. Most of Derek's artwork carries a Native American theme due to his love for their culture. Four sons, Sean, Derek Jr., Carl, and John with one grandson Xane, and ex-wife Alfreda, survive Derek. He has two brothers, John (wife Sherry), Dean (wife Karen), and a sister Renee. His parents, Nora and Milt Cherland, preceded Derek in death. If you are interested in attending a remembrance for Derek on Sunday, November 9 in El Centro, contact 323-633-0844.
