At random: A submarine often navigates by sound when submerged. Sound can travel 3,000 nautical miles or more through water.

While watching tv last night I was really pleased that all of those political advertisements have finally stopped being aired. During one of the commercials some store began it's run with a Christmas song and it shocked me to realize that maybe I'm not supposed to look forward to spending a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with my family. Instead I should be out spending every penny I have at these stores, buying crap I or no one else needs.

This has been going on since I was a kid and my folks complained about the ads on the radio being aired.

We are doomed to this commercialism. We don't hafta like it, but it's gonna be in our face until we're under the sod.....

Merry Christmas

Your right Joe. I can remember my mother bringing me and my brothers to see Santa at Macy's when we were kids during WW11. What a thrill that was. I don't remember how soon before Christmas that was but we loved it anyway.
BTW my grandson Matt is doing fine. He is now 23 and married.
Later,

Geeez Joe, married at 23 and you call that fine??? I'd say he's got a lot to learn yet.

Too many people,
spend money they don't have,
to buy things they don't want,
to impress people they don't like.
Will Rogers.

The advertizers have us all convinced that our love for our families is dependent on how much money we spend on them. If we spend $X, then we don't love them enough, and we should have spent $2X instead. Unfortunately, the kids have bought into this idea. "If you don't buy me a $1000 thingamajig for Christmas, then you don't love me."

I have finally decided to buy a new big screen TV for me, so I must really love myself! Talk about narcissism!

Such a pity.

Heh heh. Precisely what we did last Xmas, JrK. Everyone else got a card.

Back when I was gainfully employed, we'd go out shopping for the extended family and a grand or 2 would go 'POOF!'. And half the time it was hardly even acknowledged. (And trust me: I HATED to go shopping during the holiday period!)

When I was forcibly 'retired' 5 years ago, all that came to a screeching halt, and we couldn't be happier. Everyone gets a card, and knows we expect nothing, so it's easier on all concerned.

As far as the ads and the early displays ... we just ignore them.

We are at this very moment installing hardwood floors and recarpeting 2 bedrooms. That will take care of Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. for a couple of years at least. We really don't do any gift exchanging except for the Grandkids. We do things for our 2 grown kids during the year and they do for us also. Christmas for us is all year long.
