At random: A church in Kyoto, Japan calls its congregation to worship with a bell from a submarine. The bell, from the submarine USS RAY was purchased for the church, and was transported to Yokosuka, Japan by another submarine, the USS RONQUIL.

Thomas Reid Duvall CHESAPEAKE - Thomas Reid Duvall, 76, went to be with the Lord Nov. 9, 2008. Thomas was born in Michigan City, Ind., the son of the late Glenn and Dorethia Duvall. Mr. Duvall is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Elizabeth Perlick Duvall; his daughters, Susan Zegstroo and her husband Fred, Diana Carila and her husband Steve; and his son, Brian Duvall. Also surviving Thomas are his six grandchildren; his stepchildren, Michael Perlick and Karen Shields; and a stepgrandson. Mr. Duvall is also survived by his brother, John H. Duvall and his sisters, Nancy Johnston and Susan Seay, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Mr. Duvall was a member of the Green Acres Presbyterian Church, a member of the Churchland Lions Club and a veteran, serving his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Navy. Soon after high school, Thomas enlisted in the Navy and did his basic training in San Diego, then afterwards participated in the NESEP Program at Purdue University, where he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Duvall then went on to serve in the submarine services and served on such vessels as the USS Argonaut, the USS Grenadier and the USS Nathaniel Greene. Lt. Cmdr. Duvall ended his naval career as the commanding officer of the Navy's Guided Missile School at Dam Neck, Va. After retiring from the Navy, Mr. Duvall also had a second career teaching math and physics for 25 years in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. Special thanks to Dr. Martin Harpen and his staff of Portsmouth Nephrology and Heartland Hospice for their kind care. A memorial service to celebrate Thomas' life will be held Friday at Green Acres Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Walter Hunting officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Green Acres Presbyterian Church, 3135 Hanley Ave., Portsmouth.
