I belive at this time that for subs anyway, 2-5 subs make up a squadron, then several squadrons make up a group. For instance SubGroup 2 is out of Groton and includes Suadrons 6, 8, 16, and 20. And COMFUBFOR who is also COMSUBLANT seems to be senior to COMSUBPAC. I think 1,3,7,11,15,7,9, and 17 come under COMSUBPAC
Squadron commanders are called Commodores, but are actually senior Captains, and Sub Group Commandes are rear admirals. From what I can see Submarine divisions are longer in existance. When you bring it up on the internet, there are divisions listed, but when you go to them, all the info refers back to WWII era.

The short answer is look in Undersea Warfare magazine.

Back in the old DBF days, normal (and I mean "usual" conditions - because there were always variations)
4 boats = Division
2 Divisions = Squadron
2-3 Squadrons = Flotilla
x Flotillas = Force

Up until recently, COMSUBPAC was 2 stars, COMSUBLANT was 3, but COMSUBPAC didn't report to COMSUBLANT, but to CINCPACFLT.

Now, I understand that COMSUBFOR is addu COMSUBLANT and that COMSUBPAC reports to COMSUBFOR.

Also, don't forget that the old time 1-star Commodore is now called Rear Admiral (lower half) and the 2-star is also called Rear Admiral (upper half) -- the difference is that the 1-star paygrade is O-7 while the 2-star is O-8. Confused? That's normal

Way back, SUBGRU Westpac became SUBFLOT SEVEN and is now back to SUBGRU SEVEN so there are several "correct" answers depending on what particular point in time we are discussing.

Divisions and Flotillas have disappeared, so much for the Old Navy!

So here is today's batting lineup: (* = number of stars) (==== separates direct reports)
Data from current Undersea Warfare -- this order of battle ("OOB) stuff used to be CONFIDENTIAL!

In all, I count:
SSN - LANT: 28, PAC: 27 TOTAL: 55
SSGN - LANT: 2; PAC: 2 TOTAL: 4
SSBN - LANT: 6; PAC: 8 TOTAL: 14
TENDERS: LANT: 0; PAC: 2
====
COMSUBFOR *** VADM Jay Donnelly - Norfolk (aadu COMSUBLANT)
SUBRON-6 Capt Christopher Thomas Norfolk [4-SSN]
SUBRON-8 Capt Robert Kelso Norfolk [4-SSN]
====
COMSUBGRU-2 * RADM Bruce Grooms Groton [2-SSN]
SUBRON-2 Capt Emil Casciano Groton [6-SSN; NR-1 (in decomm)]
SUBRON-4 Capt Robert Clark Groton [7-SSN]
SUBDEVRON-12 Capt Robert Burke Groton [5-SSN]
====
COMSUBGRU-8 ** RADM Joe Leidig Jr.Naples Italy
====
COMSUBGRU-10/COMSUBGRU TRIDENT * RADM Timothy Giardina Kings Bay
SUBRON-16 Capt Daniel Mack Kings Bay [2-SSGN]
SUBRON-20 Capt Daniel Mack Kings Bay [6-SSBN]
====
====
COMSUBPAC ** RADM Douglas McAnenty - Pearl Harbor
SUBRON-1 Capt Lee Hankins - Pearl [5-SSN]
SUBRON-3 Captain Ed Takesuye - Pearl [4-SSN]
SUBRON-7 Captain Christopher Kaiser - Pearl [6-SSN]
SUBRON-11 Capt Brett Genoble - San Diego [5-SSN, 1-ARDM]
SUBRON-15 Captain Douglas Wright - Guam [3-SSN, 1-AS]
====
COMSUBGRU-7 * RADM Michael Connor - Yokosuka Japan
====
COMSUBGRU-9/COMSUBGRU TRIDENT * RADM Timothy Giardina - Bangor WA [1-AS]
SUBDEVRON-5 Capt Stuart Munsch [3-SSN; Deep Submergence Unit]
SUBRON-17 Capt David Ratte [1-SSN, 4-SSBN]
SUBRON-19 Capt John Tammen [2-SSGN, 4-SSBN]

If you are wondering why COMSUBGRU-7 and COMSUBGRU-8 don't have boats assigned, they do -- when the boats "CHOP" to their operational control on deployment to WESTPAC (west of 160E) or the Med, respectively.

Ttttthatz all, folks!

From 1956-1965, SubRon Six consisted of SubDiv 62 and SubDiv 63....and was part of SubFlot II.......as leading seaman you had to make damn certain you had the proper burgee flying from the pigstick. DEX

For a good breakdown of the Navy organization in 1941, take a look at:

Gil Shaddock - Even numbers in the Atlantic, Odd numbers in the Pacific.

Gil, I swear, that is probably the only tidbit left over from days of old! So, when is that going to get changed? I'm surprised Zumwalt didn't do it when he had the chance!

Interesting. Charles Harris Roper, the SubDiv 42 Commander on Dec 7, 1941 was the relieving skipper of the CO after the fateful sailing incident of the R-14 in 1921. He died 1/22/1971 in San Francisco as a RADM, Ret, at age: 77.

Also, the CO of the Fulton, AS-11, was Alexander Dean Douglas, the XO of the R-14 and aboard at the time of the incident.
He died on 2/25/89 in Escondido, CA as a CAPT. ret. at age: 95.
