At random: Records for enemy shipping sunk by U.S. submarines during World War II are held by two boats built by Electric Boat. The USS FLASHER sank 100,231 tons of Japanese shipping, while the USS TAUTOG holds the record for the most ships - 26.

A bit smoky here in Ventura County this morning. Brush fires to the north in Santa Barbara. Many $ million homes burned to the ground.
Now we have two fires in the North San Fernando Valley. Two freeways closed. Lots of smoke in the air here - 50 miles west of the fires. A mobile home park is completely destroyed, as are probably hundreds of homes.
I'm safe here, too far away from any brushy areas.
Santa Ana winds, very strong from the east. Very strong, very dry, and with the already tinder dry brush adds up to a Red Flag situation. Winds are 50 mph, gusting to 70.
Helicopters have been flying since just before sunrise dropping water, and one of the Super Scooper airplanes is flying too.
More as it happens.

Arnold, aka Conan needs to immediately stop all Zippo and match sales to lesbians and men who kiss each other....They might be behind all this...If Barbara Striesand's house burns down immediately find out where Ray Stone is....DEX

Jon - any problems in Topanga Canyon yet? Those folks have to be holding their breath and crossing their fingers - that place was a tinderbox 2 months ago when I visited there, I can't imagine how dry it is by now.

Everybody's holding their breath until they turn blue with anticipation. So far only the three biggies, Santa Barbara, Sylmar and Orange County. They haven't called up the helicopter I used to work with yet. Lots of petty politics even while buildings burn and people get injured.

No, the forest service changed some of the requirements and now the companies have to have a licensed helo mechanic on site, so I don't qualify. They got a helo mech to drive the truck and work on the bird.
