At random: Interests in submarines extends to royalty and presidents. The King of England and the King and Queen of Spain are among those who have made submerged cruises in submarines. As a result of a trip in an early United States submarine, President "Teddy" Roosevelt ordered extra compensation for personnel serving in the "Silent Service." President Harry Truman made a 440 foot dive in a captured German submarine. The first President to cruise aboard a nuclear submarine was President Eisenhower who rode the USS SEAWOLF out of Newport, Rhode Island on September 26, 1957.

Subject: Nancy's Happy Day to You! Sub Poem: The Galley

Happy Thanksgiving from cookbook mess crank/sous chef Nancy, shown with three professional chefs who've volunteered to help with the submarine cookbook. Each has served as a volunteer aboard a submarine as a part of NAVSUP's Adopt-a-Ship Program.

Thanks to Rontini for posting this poem. Sure fits with submarine cookbook. No, Dex didn't write the poem, but sure sounds like him. Then, again, note the publishing date.

The Galley

'Though time may dim each cherished scene
     That I once knew at sea,
And dull each sense which once was keen,
     I hope there'll sometimes be
A vision comes before my eyes
     Until my senses rally,
And catch the smells that used to rise
     Above the old boat's galley.

Could fairer feast be set for kings
     Than used to greet our eyes?
The range heaped high with luscious things;
     The biscuits and the pies;
The soup in caldrons steaming hot;
     The golden hot cakes flying;
The coffee bubbling in the pot;
     The eggs and bacon frying!

Let others dine in big hotels,
     But give me galley fare!
I've paid the price for fancy smells
     And garnished dishes rare;
I've tasted many a costly brew -
     But none of them can tally
With some I've eaten with the crew,
     From out the old boat's galley.

I've banqueted and dined in state
     In wealthy restaurants;
I've waited long and feasted late
     In swell bohemian haunts -
But I'd have gladly missed them all
     To line up in the alley
With our old crew, and hear mess call,
     Outside the old boat's galley.
