At random: "I saw the submariners, the way they stood aloof and silent, watching their pigboat with loving eyes. They are alone in the Navy. I admired the PT boys. And I often wondered how the aviators had the courage to go out day after day and I forgave their boasting. But the submariners! In the entire fleet they stand apart!” -- James Michener

Does any one know why the Groton was decommissioned so early, most of the other boats early in the class are still around or were scrapped after the Groton, I was on her till just after commissioning and lost track of her

While I can't speak specifically in the case of the Groton, most of the older 688's were decommed as they came up for reactor refueling. The navy looked at the cost of the refueling vs. the remaining life expectancy of the boat and factored in the desired force levels. Thus, many boats that were still in good shape wound up getting the axe. Hindsight being what it is, this was probably a bad decision in many cases.

It was a BUDGET decision - in the early 1990s, the Congress, in its infinite wisdom, decided we didn't need such a large military, and a whole lot of submarines, since the Soviet Union had just collapsed, the world was now safe for democracy, and they had better uses for the money......
