At random: The first submarine which actually sank another enemy vessel under combat conditions was the CSS HUNLEY built during the Civil War. The Union frigate HOUSATONIC on blockade station off Charleston, S. C. was the victim. The incident occurred on February 17, 1864.

Please explain something to an old DBF'er who has been in a time warp for the past 50 years and knows virtually nada about our modern Navy.
If the new Virginia class boats have verticle launch tubes for firing Cruise missles, why are the not designated as SSGN?

OK, lessee now ...
We got your SSGNs (Trident conversions that fire smart Tomahawks).
We got your SSNs (Virginia class that fire smart Tomahawks).

Other than number of weapons and bulk size, w.t.f.'s the difference?

I'm just sayin' - ya know?

OK Ric. So the converted SSGN's, do they not take on similar missions as the the VA class?( I thought that some of the space saved from the silos was converted to birthing for Seals) If not what are they doing with all those Tomahawks?
Just what is the mission of the converted SSGN's?

The SSGN is a "missile" boat. Prime purpose is to launch one or all at designated targets. Otherwise hide.

SSN is an attack boat, hunter killer in my day. Prey on shipping and the bad guys subs and bases of operation. feed data to the SSGN's. Surveillance, scouting.

When the missiles were permanently removed from the original SSBN Boats they were redesignated as SSN before decomissioning.

Is it the mission or armament that decide the designation?

It would be the primary mission that determines the designation. As an example, a boomer SSBN is quite capable of sinking an enemy sub with torpedos, but her primary job is to hide then destroy the Commies with her nuke SLBM's.

Same thing with the SSGN's. While they are fully capable of taking out an enemy skimmer or sub, they primarily exist to launch strikes with her massed numbers of Tomahawks. The "G" in SSGN is a holdover from the Halibut/Regulus days. Tomahawks are obviously not guided, but they are not SLBM's either. Rather than make up a new designation, it was just easier to use the G.

The four new SSGN's had their designation changed directly to SSGN from SSBN. They didn't go to SSN in the interim. Some of the early SSBN's (George Washington and Ethan Allen classes) did revert to SSN for a few years when they had their Polaris tubes inactivated.

Is there any difference in accuracy or operation between a Tamahawk launced from a torpedo tube or a vertical launcher?

Late brother concluded Navy career as program manager for the Tomahawk testing and development and successful launches in 1983. And it was Capts. Yockey and Fox, former USNA classmates, who got the funds to development the vertical launchers for submarines.

Tommie does have a great guidance systems. Uses highly integrated GPS and inertial navigation system (INS) guidance coupled with digital scene matching area correlation (DSMAC) and terrain contour

GPS-only missions provide for very short mission planning response time.matching (TERCOM) for the highest end-game accuracy.

I don't remember if Tomahawk guidance can be made to change course.

For Tomahawk data sheets, put Raytheon Tomahawk in your browser.
