WARNKEN, Herman Joseph, 93, died on November 30, 2008. He was born in Kansas City, MO on November 11, 1915, and was predeceased by his three brothers, Raymond, Elmer and Ernest Warnken. After high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and then enlisted in the US Navy serving aboard the USS SARATOGA, USS YORKTOWN, USS DENVER, USS HOWARD W. GILMORE, USS QUILLBACK, USS CONGER, USS SEA LEOPARD, USS ANTHEDON, USS POMPON, USS BURRFISH, USS BARRACUDA, and at the USN Submarine Base in Groton. He was awarded the American Defense Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and recently, the 2008 Connecticut Public Service Award for service in World War II. After his career in the Navy, Herman was employed at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics. Herman was married to the late Josephine M. Shea of West Springfield, Mass. for nearly 50 years. She predeceased him Nov. 21, 1994. He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Anderson of Westerly and Margaret Warnken of New London; two grandchildren, Katherine Pringle and her husband, Ian Pringle, and Erick Anderson and his wife, Aimee Anderson; and three great-grandchildren, Aidan, Ella and Evan Anderson. There will be a wake at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in New London followed by the funeral Mass at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, at St. Mary Church to burial at St. Mary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Star of the Sea Church Building Fund, 10 Huntington St., New London, CT 06320; or to United Community and Family Services, a non-profit tax-exempt agency at 1 Beechwood Dr., Waterford, CT 06385, for its Shoreline Adult Day Center. Herman's family wishes to extend thanks to Reverend Robert Washabaugh at St. Mary's and to all our father's friends at St. Mary's and at Shoreline Adult Day Center. The Thomas L. FUSCO, Anthony Armand, 77, of Coles Meadow Rd. died Saturday November 29, 2008 at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Born in Spring-field, February 13, 1931, he was the son of the late Anthony and Giovanina (Ricciardelli) Fusco. Tony graduated from Springfield Technical High School and attended Western New England College. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the submarine USS Entemedor (SS-340) and earned the National Defense Service and Navy Occupation medals. Prior to leaving for military service, Tony worked at the Springfield Armory. Upon his return home he was employed in Research and Development at Gilbert and Barker Manufacturing Company, where he developed a patented oil-saving device. When the company relocated, Tony became Operations Engineer at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. After 24 years there, he retired in 1990 as Assistant Superintendent of Physical Plant. Tony was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He belonged to the Springfield, Holyoke and Pioneer Valley Kennel Clubs and the A.C.E. Agility Club. This past August, Tony and his wife, Joyce Lak, celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Along with his wife, Tony leaves his loving children, Eda Gilday, Anthony S. Fusco and Mario Fusco; his sister Josephine Frasier; and six grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m. at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to the Shriners Hospital, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104 or to the American Bouvier des Flandres Health Foundation, C/O David Raper, Treasurer, 1718 Trinity Rd., Raleigh, NC 27607 or to a c harity of your choice. Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton is handling the arrangements.
