Subject: QUICK! Submarine Christmas??

Local newspaper got wind of the sub cookbook I'm writing with assist from SUBFOR's master chief culinary specialist. Requests a feature story for Christmas time publication. No publication guarantee.

(1) Were (are) boats decorated for Christmas? If so, how? Exchange presents?

(2) If in port, do some of crew visit children in hospitals or do any other charitable causes?

(3) If at sea, "family grams" or other communications from loved ones?

(4) Christmas presents (type) from loved ones?

(5) I'll get a typical menu from CSCM; however, any food you especially remember on Christmas?

(6) Play Christmas carols, watch Christmas movies?

Any other thoughts for this newspaper story?

Thanks,

Nancy

I can only answer for the 599B and 600B duirng the 60's. We didn't decorate the boat other than a small tree kept in the Crews Mess when chow was not being served. On both boats the families would send Christmas gifts to the ships office at the Sub Base and these would be packed and shipped with the crew to Holy Loch. On Christmas someone would dress up like Santa Claus and carry the sack through the boat handing out the gifts. There were also Christmas cards from the families that were handed out. I don't remember any extra familygrams as we only receievd three per person. We had a special Christmas meal which you'll see when you get the menu. One time some of the crew tried Christmas carols in the mess deck but that was not the usual. The ships entertainment system, consisting of a tape deck, was loaded with Christmas music for the evening. I remember one patrol where we received a WSRT message on Christmas. We wondered who the sadistic bastard was that generated that one. I may be wrong but I also thought we either had a movie marathon or casino night. That's about all I can remember.
