A little background first. Frank Served on Sirago from 70-72 and was on the decomm crew. He was a machinist mate. He went to college and became a doctor, MD type and for years did his doctor thing. He was feeling a little discouraged with health insurance issues, andĀ  the mundaneness (is that even a word?) of his job and he wanted to make a difference. So he joined the Army. He was made a Lt Col and he and 5 other previous service types was sent to knife and fork school, so they know which fork to use in a foxhole and was sent to Afghanistan for a tour of medical duty, all as Lt Col's I just recieved this email from him and I thought you guys would like to read it....BTW...this group of doctors are in their mid-fifties. This message has already been sent to all hands of the Sirago. We hope that Frank will be able to make our reunion this coming October, 2009.

We received the following message fromĀ Frank Berlingeri, LTC(SS), MD, USA in Afghanistan

Things are good here, so far no rocket attacks and the wire hasn't been
breached in 3 weeks so I guess that is good. Winter is coming here and
the Taliban have been stocking up getting ready for their spring assaults.
Hopefully we will take the battle to them this winter to deplete their
ammo stores so they have less to hit us with when spring comes.
I love the looks I get when they see my dolphins on my army ACU's, (army combat uniform)
I had some specially embroidered in black to wear on my uniform.
And yes there are still a lot of burqua's here and we do not treat the women
because the husbands will not allow anyone to touch their wives.
I will be here until the middle of May when I return to Fort Benning
which is my new home, take care,
DBF,
Frank Berlingeri
