http://donmac.org/Flags.htm
The above web page was static for some 32 months.
Ron Martini sent me about 40 additions so today I updated
the page. There is more work needed, but at least the
Flags are posted. If anyone has picture of any missing
battle flag, please send I will add to the page. |

WOW!! What a page! I spent an hour perusing these flags, trying to decipher some of the symbols. The really neat thing about these flags is that they were made by the crew, as the War progressed. Wouldn't it be neat if we could get some printing company to do a poster of all the flags, similar to the submarine silhouttes?
I hope that all the original flags are being preserved in a safe condition so they will be available for future generations. To me, they are just as honorable as Civil War Unit Battle flags.
Thanks Don, BZ!

I have held two of these in my hands. The Sculpin SS 191 flag is with the son of Cdr Lucius H Chappell who turned the boat over just before she was sunk He commanded the first 6 war patrols.
This is me holding the flag. The flag is fragile and needs conserving.
I have also held the original battle flag for Thresher SS 200. The grandson of the Thresher cook is known many here who has custody of the flag. I am also holding this flag when the photo was taken.

The cotton material these flags are made from will not last much longer without immediate conservation!!!!! It seems to me that the USSVI could take on this project (in colaboration w/ WWII Subvets). This is a very visible part of our history, Guys. It would be a travesty if these flags are allowed to rot away. I would not know how to approach this for the ones that are in private hands, but I for one think that this is VERY IMPORTANT!
Any USSVI officers looked into this?

The Naval Undersea Museum here in Keyport, WA has three of our WWII battle flags on exhibit including one from my old boat the USS Sea Lion (the one that sank the only battleship in war time)... NO ONE should be hanging on to these!!! Get them donated to a conservatory museum NOW! If in need of donation paperwork (simple) contact me "like yesterday"...

Here is the Bergall's battle flag (320) on the boat in 1945 and at the 2003 Reunion in Reno. It was "hidden" in the home of one of the 320's crew for many years and his widow and son didn't know it was there (in a box in the bottom of a closet in their home) until after crewmember had passed away.
