BRYSON, Allen Carl, 91, formerly of Pequot Ave., New London, the last survivor of the USS Squalus, died Monday December 1, 2008 at Fairview in Groton. He was born October 30, 1917, near Greenville, S.C. He was the son of Stella Johnson and Marion Bryson. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Johns Bryson who died in 1997. Carl joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and then enlisted in the Navy on January 5, 1936. After completing basic training and trade school in Norfolk, Va., he served on the ships; USS Henderson, USS Medusa and the USS Mississippi. He was transferred from the Mississippi to Submarine and Diesel School in New London. He served on the USS R-4 (SS-81) and in 1939, was assigned to the USS Squalus (SS-192) to put her into commission at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. Carl was aboard the USS Squalus when it sank on May 23, 1939. He was rescued from the sunken sub, and then worked in the salvage crew until the boat was towed into the shipyard. He was then transferred to the USS R-14 (SS-91) in November of 1939, and in 1941, was assigned to the Escape Training Tank, where he trained Tyrone Power for the film "Crash Dive". Other vessels he served on were USS O-4 (SS-65), USS Sea Robin (SS-407), USS Tench (SS-417) USS Valcour (AVP-55), USS Macon (CA-132), USS Fulton (AS-11) USS Leyte (CVS-32) and USS Sunbird (ASR-15). He retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer Four after 30 years of service. Self taught, he furthered his education while in the Navy by attending the University of Illinois and the College of William and Mary. From 1966 to 1979, worked at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics as a planner and project head. He also taught English to Russian emigrants from 1979 to 1996. Carl was a member of the Navy Lodge in Kittery, Maine, the Brainard Lodge of Masons, the Sojourners, was a life member of the SubVets of World War II, US Submarine Veterans, Inc and the Holland Club. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Gordon W. Bryson and his wife, Liz of Kamuela, Hawaii, Capt. Eric C. Bryson and his wife, Mary of Atlantic Beach, Fla., and Allyn B. Donath and her husband, Tim of Mystic; and six grandchildren, Carl, Richard, Nathaniel, Chelsea, Joshua and Rachel. He also leaves behind his dear friend, Georgia Gore. A funeral tribute will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Second Congregational Church in New London, 45 Broad St., New London. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery with military honors rendered by the Antique Veterans. Calling hours will be held at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday. KOUNAS, Chris N., 73, of Camp Hill, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at his home. He was born September 20, 1935 in Paterson, NJ, to the late Nicholas C. and Lemonia (Kotsis) Kounas. A Veteran of the US Navy Submarine Service he was a retired salesman from R.F. Fager Company. He also was Purchasing Director for Borg-Warner, York and worked on the Poseidon and Polaris projects in the Instrumentation and Research Lab for General Dynamics Corporation Electric Boat Division, Groton, CT. He served as secretary and treasurer and was a life member of the United States Submarine Veterans. He also was a former member of NRA, Carlisle Fish and Game, and Purchasing Directors of America. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Eva S. Touloumes. He is survived by his loving wife, Verna A.; his beloved children, Melany C. Williams and husband Peter M. of San Francisco, CA, Valerie K. Sponseller and husband David A. of Camp Hill, and David C. Kounas and wife Shanna R. of Pittsburgh; a brother, Thomas N. Kounas of Mechanicsburg; four beloved grandchildren, Melany C. and Christian P. Sponseller and Ashton L. and Ethan D. Kounas; several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 10- 11 a.m., Friday at Parthemore Funeral Home, New Cumberland, followed by a Trisagion Service officiated by Rev. Father Anthony Demetri, Father Deacon Franklin Dickos, Chantor. Interment will be in Mount Holly Springs Cemetery. LAMPERT, Donald Wesley, 80, died Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at CMC-NorthEast, Concord. He was born November 28, 1928, in Wayne County, WV, the son of the late Claude Palmer Lampert and Ruth Irene Hoy Lampert. He was the second oldest of 10 children. Donald joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He served on the USS Missouri for five years and saw battle on the USS Wisconsin during the Korean War. In 1954, he was sent to the US Naval Mine Craft Station in Charleston, SC, followed by a missile weaponry training school in Great Lakes, IL. Donald then completed the US Naval Submarine Training School out of New London, CT. After this training, he served on the submarine, the USS Cavalla (SS-244), and was one of the first enlisted men to be promoted to L.D.O. He furthered his naval education in 1959 by completing the US Naval Guided Missile training in Pomono, CA. Donald then served at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Crane, IN., followed by the Advanced Guided Missile Training School in Damneck, VA. From 1963 to 1965 he and his family were stationed on Guam, where Donald, now a Lieutenant, served on the USS Proteus, a submarine tender that provided support and maintenance to active submarines. Donald was relocated to Yorktown, VA, in 1967, where for three years he supervised weaponry maintenance to supply ships and submarines with ammunition. At the end of his naval career as a Lt. Commander, Donald was a special weapons repair officer on the USS Fulton stationed out of New London, CT. During his 24 years of military duty, he was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, World War II Victory Medal; Korean Four-Star Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal and the UN Medal of Service. Also during his military career, Donald received 68 awards from first master to second place in the Naval SharpShooters Championship for rifle and pistol. He retired after 24 years of service to his country on Augst 1, 1970. He, then, relocated his family to Kannapolis, where he served Cabarrus County as magistrate for 16 years. Donald enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking. He was well-known for his to-scale reproduction of the USS Missouri battleship. A very special enjoyment he found in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a mason for 50 years and was an active member of Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge No. 626. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, officiated by the Rev. Erin Yow. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Navy and the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. Masonic rites to follow conducted by Cannon Memorial Lodge No. 626. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday prior to the service at the funeral home. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Valda Gray Lampert; two daughters, Gail Denise Overcash of Kannapolis, Cathy Hales and husband, Dennis, of Concord; one son, Michael Wesley Lampert of Binghamton, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Brandon Overcash, Donald Lampert, Bethany Overcash, Brandy Deaton and husband, Michael, Dawn Rainey and husband, Ray, and Justin Hales and his wife, Susan; two great-grandchildren, Emma Deaton and Owen Deaton; five sisters, Dorothy Tucker, Dolores Bartram, Doreen Winn, Doretta Huff and Doris Johns; four brothers, Doyle Lampert, Douglas Lampert, Dorwin (Sam) Lampert and Dorvil Lampert. Carl Bryson in 2005 at the second Gold Star Bridge dedication. I met him at that time when this photo was taken.
In the yellow in the back row is Ms Lumpy Bumps. Carl was the last of the Squalus survivors. A very nice man

I just learned that Carl served on a relief crew of Sea Robin following it's 2nd patrol.
