At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

LOPATIN, Michael, 87 of Mannington, NJ died Friday, December 5, 2008 at the Memorial Hospital of Salem County. Born in Pennsville, he was the son of the late Nick and Annie Res Lopatin. A US Navy Veteran of WWII, he served aboard the submarines Corsair (SS-435) and Gunnel (SS-253). He retired from DuPont Chambers Works as a supervisor following 40 years of service. Mr. Lopatin had been a longtime member of Haines Neck United Methodist Church and had enjoyed hunting, traveling and bowling. He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen M. in 1995. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Melinda Wilson of Mannington, his grandchildren, Michael, Robert Lee, Jr. and Nicole Elizabeth, and his siblings, Anna Fowser, Julie Buskirk and George Lopatin. Mr. Lopatin was predeceased by siblings, John, Nick, Katie Mazonni, Helen Vino and Mary Hess. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Tuesday in the Ashcraft Funeral Home, 740 S. Broadway, Pennsville where a viewing will be held from 10 to 11 AM. Interment will follow in Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro. www.ashcraftfuneralhomes.com

SNOWDEN, Correy H., 91, a long time resident of Blake Road, Standish died at the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough on December 4, 2008, after 25 months of excellent care. He was born in Canaan, Nova Scotia on April 28, 1917, the only child of T. Barry and Florence Skidmore Snowden. His father died of influenza in 1918 while on a wheat excursion to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. His mother moved to Massachusetts to seek employment and to be near two of her sisters around 1920. He became a naturalized citizen as a youth. He moved to Standish in the 1930s and graduated from Standish High School in 1937. Mr. Snowden married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Dow, on Nov. 11, 1937. He served two terms in the U.S. Navy Submarine division during WW II and was assigned to the South Pacific. He served on the submarines Balao, Cabezon and Halfbeak. Upon discharge, he went to work for Coca Cola, Standish Gas Company and later for Standish Telephone Company from which he retired in 1981. He also worked briefly for Oxford County Telephone and Telegraph Company in Buckfield. In the 1960s he became a part owner of P38, a winning stockcar driven by Homer Drew. He was a lifetime member of VFW and past member of the Maine Stock Car Assn., Standish SnoBlazers and Maine Wheels. He enjoyed several summers in Nesourdnahunk Campground near Baxter State Park and about 20 winters in Lakeland, Fla. His mother died in 1976. His wife of 61 years died in 1999. He leaves two daughters, Judith Jamison, his long term care giver and her husband F. Robert Jamison of Standish and Lakeland, Fla., and Coralie Tompson of Buxton. His grandchildren are Debbie, Barry and Ray Jamison, Dall of Standish, Arthur Tompson of Buxton, Michael Tompson of Standish and Barbara Knecht of Towanda, PA. Great-grandchildren are Natasha and Mariah Jamison of Standish, Nathan and Katie Tompson of Towanda, Pa., Hunter, Chloe and Cole Tompson of Buxton and Coralie and Whitney Tompson of Gorham. Great-step-grandchildren are Josh, Angie and Ben Knecht of Towanda, Pa. A graveside service with military honors is being planned for May 23, 2009, at Dow's Corner Cemetery in Standish followed by a celebration of life. Arrangements are by Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland.
