At random: John Philip Holland built several submarines before the USS Holland, which became the first undersea craft commissioned by the U.S. Navy. The Holland was purchased on April 11, 1900 for a price of $150,000. It was commissioned into the US Navy on October 12, 1900.

The 'man' I'm building in my home is pretty much finished. Remember, 'he' started out as a 'she.' The first thing I did was a bilateral radical mastectomy - courtesy of she/he wearing a bullet-proof vest.

Then, all the female makeup was removed, and I totally re-painted 'his' face. No eye-make-up for my guy! My grandson Kyle came over and painted his brown eyes, with the surrounding 'whites.' My hands aren't steady enough anymore for this fine work. He looks 'pretty' good.

Today, I glued on a beard and moustache, and put 'his' wig on. Since Billie/Billy does have her/his head at kind of a rakish angle, the wig doesn't look just right. It's a female wig, supposedly cut in a manish fashion. I took the wig to a beauty school, and it was sorta butchered. I did price male hair pieces, but they were pretty expensive. Maybe some day, I'll run across one for a bargain, then the current one will be replaced.

The 'dummy' has no hands, so I'll duct-tape white dress gloves stuffed with cotton balls on the ends of the arms.

Now, I just have to coordinate a time when Karen (Elmer's daughter) and the curater of our local museum can get together, and we'll dress Billy (really Elmer) in Elmer's WWII submarine 'sailor suit' (used to always be able to yank Elmer's chain when I called it that) and put him in the case with the other Olmstead men - father and grandfather - who served in Civil War and Spanish-American War, and we will have our very own exclusively Olmstead display at Rapid City's Journey Museum.

You're all invited to come see it. Or should I say, "Y'all come to see us now."?

By the way, I'll be very glad to get rid of her/him. I've had 'it' in my home for about six months, now, and it's still spooky to walk around a corner and come face-to-face with a full-sized mannikan staring me in the face.

OK, I'll admit it: you people in the north country (AKA 'fly-over' land) are just plain weird.

Bob, when those blizzards hit and cabin fever sets in, it does things to you.

Cora, don't pay any attention to Flapper. He has a life size doll in his house too, she's just 'sleeping' until he gets a new leak repair kit.
