At random: A submarine, the TURTLE, was employed by the American revolutionary army to attack the British. It was built by David Bushnell at Saybrook, Connecticut, just a few miles from the present site of Electric Boat Division of the General Dynamics Corporation, and the U.S. Naval Submarine Base.

CURRIN, William "Bill" Hibbs, 88, former Anchorage resident Currin, died December 5, 2008, at his assisted living residence in Palmer, AK. Bill was born April 22, 1920, in Monroe, OR, to Cleve J. and Mabel A. (Hibbs) Currin. After high school he joined the Navy on February 18, 1941. He served aboard troop transports in the Pacific and on a submarine in the Aleutians.
Four months after his discharge, in November 1946, he and his parents moved to Alaska to live near his sister Dorothy Steadman and family in Mountain View. Later he purchased a lot with a small cabin next door where he lived with his parents. Bill ran a limousine service from Anchorage to Valdez in the early 1950s. He raised, trained and raced sled dogs, worked in the large family garden and enjoyed hunting. After moving to his DeArmoun Road property in 1960 he raised exotic poultry and became interested in genealogy. Bill was a charter member of the Alaska Society of Mayflower descendants and Alaska Sons of the American Revolution. Bill married Velma (Norris) Herdina in 1973. They were active in their church, enjoyed gardening, fishing and traveling. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1980. In 1983 Bill and Velma relocated to Cave Junction, OR, where they continued to garden, raise prize sheep and travel. In 2002, Bill returned to Alaska to be near his family. Bill is survived by his sister, Alice Miller, 93, longtime Alaska resident and artist; his step-children, Bonnie Hager and husband Bill, Beth Asplund and Mike Herdina, all living in the Matanuska Valley; and many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Velma; and his sister, Dorothy Steadman. His cremains will be spread at sea.

MATTINGLY, Orville Clarence (Matt), 85, died peace fully in his home on Thursday, December 4, 2008, surrounded by his family and friends. Matt was born in Perry County, Missouri, on January 6, 1923, to Clarence and Gertrude Mattingly. He entered the Navy at the age of 17 where he served as a Submariner with distinction until 1946. These were some of his fondest memories. He was a traveler who, early in life, loved to take trips across the country. He was a friend to all he met in life and would help in any way he could. We all loved him dearly and will miss his good humor, jokes, and sound advice. Orville is survived by his wife of 41 years, Iris Zorzi Mattingly of Melbourne, FL; his brother, Garry Mattingly of Woodville, TX; his daughters, Sandy Christian of Slidell, LA, Belinda Carter of Palm Bay, FL, and Yvonne Markle of Bartlett, TN; his sons, Wayne Mattingly of Anchorage, AK and Warren Mattingly of Melbourne, FL; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and his many relatives in Perry County, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, please send any contributions in his honor to the American Diabetes Association or Vitas Hospice in Melbourne, Florida. A funeral service will be held in the chapel of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Indialantic, Florida. It is scheduled for Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.

MOORE, R. Stuart, 84, of Plainfield, IL, 84, died December 11, 2008 at Provena Villa Franciscan, Joliet. He was born June 16, 1924 in Los Angeles, CA. After graduating from Long Beach Poly Tech High School in 1942, Stuart enlisted in the US Navy and served in the So. Pacific Area during WWII on a naval destroyer and in the submarine service in Japan. He was discharged in 1946 and was employed by the Illinois Bell Telephone Co. for the next 35 years, retiring in 1980. He has been a longtime member of the Plainfield United Methodist Church, the Plainfield American Legion Marne Post No. 13 and the Illinois Bell Pioneers. Stuart is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie (nee Bundy); daughters Patricia (James) Reed of Arizona, Barbara (Steve) Sullivan of Texas and Sue (Tim) Cummings of Plainfield, IL; grandfather of Ian Reed, Derek Sullivan, Leslie (Dennis) Kaplan, Allison (David) Lewis, Melissa (Clay) Tomany, Timothy, Jr., Shawn and Erin Cummings; great-grandfather of Tyler, Jacob and Brianna Lewis, Ashley Kaplan and Jonathon Tomany. He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents who he lived with and raised him; his granddaughter, Katie Cummings; and a half-brother, Jerry Moore.

KILCOLLUM, James R., 89, of 136 Hunters Rd, Norwich, CT, died Tuesday December 16, 2008 at his home. He was born in Norwich on March 29, 1919, the son of the late Michael and Mary Ann (Roddy) Kilcollum. Jim was employed for 18 years as a cook at the former Norwich Hospital in Preston and was last employed as a custodian at the Samuel Huntington School in Norwich before retiring. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Taftville. He was a WW II Navy veteran having served in the Submarine Service. Jim was a member of the V.F.W. Post #594 Norwich, The American Legion Post #4 Norwich, Norwich Lodge of Elks #430, the AARP and the Norwich Senior Citizens. On January 20, 1958 he married Simone (Phaneuf) Kilcollum at Sacred Heart Church in Groton who survives him. Besides his wife he is survived by one step son, Lawrence Gadbois of Senatobia, Mississippi. One daughter-in-law Johana Gadbois of Norwich. Ten grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by one step daughter, Doris Cote and one step son, Lionel Gadbois, and two brothers and two sisters. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery Norwich.

HENSLEY, James "Benny", 73, died Monday, December 15, 2008 at Texoma Medical Center. Mr. Hensley was born on March 27, 1935 in Glenwood, Ark., son of Luther "Dude" and Gladys Pearl Patterson Hensley and was a Sherman High School graduate. On June 6, 1959 he married Sheila Lamance in Denison. Mr. Hensley was a submarine cook in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and then served in the US Naval Reserve. He was employed by Grandpappy Point Marina, often taking out cruises for the Marina. He was a Missionary Baptist. Surviving are his wife, Sheila Hensley of Pottsboro; sons, Benny Wayne Hensley and wife, Joyce of Charlotte, North Carolina, Bradley Hensley and wife, Nancy and Bryan Lee Hensley, all of Pottsboro, Dustin Wayne Hensley and wife, Krystal of Sherman; brother, Charles J. Hensley and wife, Sonja of Austin; sister, Patricia Farm and husband, Buzz of Fort Wayne, Indiana; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 5 -6 p.m. Thursday at Johnson-Moore Pottsboro Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, December 19, 2008 at Georgetown Cemetery in Pottsboro. The family suggests memorials to Texoma Tornadoes Special Olympics Group, 325 MLK Boulevard, Denison, TX 75020.
