One of about 25 photos shot by Gail Carter that is making the rounds by E-mail -- BLUEBACK in Portland:

I recall seeing the Battle Efficiency E painted only directly above the numbers on the sail -- did the B-Girls do this differently?

I just checked my Skipjack photo and the E is centered above the 8 in our hull number 585

Maybe it was a nuke versus DBF difference. I also note that Blueback's hull number is not
classic Navy style that could be masked for painting with straight runs of tape; i.e., no curves - so numbers with curves (2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 0) would just have the 'corners clipped' to suggest the curve at a distance.

If the fairwater was steel, the builders would weld on little beads to show a masker where to change masking direction at the inside and outside 'corners'.

- Bob 'Painted 'em out, and painted 'em back on after runs' Parker

Edit: I snooped a little bit at NAVSOURCE sub photos and found this shot with Lapon in the background (Triton in the foreground) post-decommissioning and the big fat 'E' is right in front of the hull number: <a href="">http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/0858622.jpg"</a>
