Make sure you see this very heart warming and shows everyone what military brotherhood is all about, there is nothing in civilian life that compares to the ties of the military.

The upcoming HBO Movie "Taking Chance", starring Kevin Bacon, recounts the
story of a Marine Corp Lt Col who escorts the remains of a fallen commerade
home from the Dover AFB Mortuary.

The movie is based on experiences that Marine LTC Strobl had during escort
duty...his summary is attached. Kevin Bacon portrays him in the movie. The
return of our fallen heroes is quite an emotional journey. While DoD policy
prohibits filming/photos of any portion of remains movement, they approved a
documentary-type HBO production. The PA liaison officers indicate the film
is very well done.

The attached narrative is a synopsis of these events and below is a link to
the movie which is due out soon (February).

I know this is an old post, but I finally got to see this movie via netflix. (No HBO here)

It a wonderful movie; so moving and up lifting for the American spirit.

I have told my younger brothers they need to sit down with their teenage boys and watch this movie.

I have been telling everyone about this movie.

It is interesting how an Al Gore or Michael Moore movie get mega press but this one is a sleeper.

If you liked it as much as I did, I hope word of mouth will keep this movie circulating around.

Here is a stimlus idea - buy every household in the US a copy on DVD.

Trivia for

Taking Chance (2009) More at IMDbPro »TRIVIA

<script type="text/javascript">

  • Based on the journal of LtCol Michael R. Strobl, USMC (ret.)

  • This film, like "Bernard and Doris" and Kenneth Branagh's version of "As You Like It", bypassed movie theatres in the U.S. and went straight to HBO, even though it was not actually made for television.

  • The Defense Department had banned virtually all media coverage of deceased vets returning home since the 1991 Gulf War until April 2009. But the military offered advice and assistance, providing Taking Chance's film crew with a rarely viewed but painstakingly accurate account of the care and protocol bestowed upon the nation's fallen warriors.

  • LTCol Mike Strobl, a Desert Storm veteran, says he decided against another combat tour largely because of his young family. But he was conflicted, and joined the many military personnel who volunteered for escort duty as Iraqi war deaths escalated. Strobl's week-long trip accompanying Phelps' body from a Delaware military mortuary to burial in Wyoming provides Taking Chance's poignant emotional context. Strobl shared his 20-page journal of the trip with friends and co-workers, and it eventually spread virally to military blogs and the media. It was quickly green-lit for filming after surfacing at HBO, which has become a major outlet for war-related programming both documentary and dramatized, with miniseries and films such as Generation Kill; Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq; Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery; and Last Letters Home: Voices of American Troops From the Battlefields of Iraq.

In one of the cuts the Air Assault badge on the sergeants left breast pocket flap jumps from centered (which is correct) to right justified (which is not). When the camera cuts back to him it is realigned.

  • Continuity: While riding in the transport vehicle from the mortuary center to the Philly airport Lt. Col Strobl's seat belt shoulder strap moves in between shots while speaking with the driver. You see his silver oak leaf, then it is covered, and then you see it again.

  • Revealing mistakes: When asked to verify the remains, the camera jumps back in forth to the tagging of the remains which shows two completely different ID tags.

  • Factual errors: They show the fallen soldier being loaded into and out of a NWA DC-9, but the aircraft shown landing in Billings, MT is an AirBus 319.

  • Factual errors: The hearse from Billings to Dubois shows county plate 7 which is Goshen county on the east side of the state. Dubois is in Fremont county 10.

  • Factual errors: The US and Infantry insignia brass were improperly aligned on the Army's Sgt class A uniform.

  • Revealing mistakes: When Lt Col Strobl arrives at his motel room in Wyoming before the funeral, the information sheet on the table concerning the services has a misspelling: Cemetary (should be Cemetery).

  • Factual errors: The name of the facility is not Dover AFB Port Mortuary, but The Charles C. Carson Center for Mortuary Science.

  • Revealing mistakes: In the parking lot where the funeral is to take place, Lt. Col. Strobl is driving a vehicle with a Montana "57 county" license plate. There are no 57 county plates in Montana as the state only has 56 counties.

  • Continuity: The movie begins with Major Thompson and another Marine arriving, at 0200 as he later states, to inform the mother of the death of Chance. The exterior of the house is shown at the beginning and at the end of the movie with the name Phelps on the mailbox. It is revealed that Chance's parents are divorced and remarried so the name on the mailbox should be that of her new husband Jeff Mack.

  • Errors in geography: While at Dover AFB getting his assignment, they tell the Colonel they will depart from Philadelphia International airport. The exterior and interior shots are not that of said airport.

...movies are 'sposed to hire 'technical experts' to make sure that everything's kosher. And this WAS a true story.

I cringe when I see operating room scenes wherein almost everything is contaminated. They shoulda hired ME for those scenes!!

I don't mean to upset  anybody here.  Nothing against the movie, but I find IMDb interesting for the trivia and goofs of all movies including the classics.  I thought some of the guys would find it interesting what they found as goofs.

Especially since so many here (not me) could work as technical advisors for some of these movies.

Wierd me finds as much interest in trivia and goofs of movies as the movie.  That doesn't mean I can't and won't enjoy the movie when I see it.  I'm just amazed at the scrutiny this site puts on all movies, especially when it is so new.

Put a classic movie like Godfather on this site and it's pages and pages of goofs and trivia.  To me it is still one of the best movies I ever saw.

By the way Ralph, please don't put words in my mouth.  Please show me where I have posted anything that would make me a critic of  this movie, I don't even know if the trivia and goofs IMDb calls out are accurate.  I am a big big fan of movies, especially the classics  and love to peruse the information that IMDb provides.

I watch the Turner Classic network  and I am mesmerized by last months interviews of great directors and the people that turned down roles and the shennanigans that went on during the movies.

Movies like "It's a Wonderful Life" and Citizen Kane were box office duds when they previewed, but now they're considered classics -- I consider that incredible.
