Master and Commander Posts: 1405 Location: Houston, TX (Best state in the US) | Subject: Memories From an email a week after the bash: "I was just sittin here enjoying one of the left over San Miguel beers...thinking it was only a week ago that folks were pulling out of here.... and thinking I'm glad it was a week ago and not this weekend, it's 103 out there right now, was about the same yesterday! Weather was just one of those things that added to the "magic" of the BASH last weekend, a little warm, mid 90's during the day, but absolutely balmy cool/warm in the evenings! Couldn't have asked for more. Yet, there is an emptiness here at the ranch this weekend....it was so "alive" with good friends, good memories remembered, new ones being made, Sue and I still expect to step outside and see someone camped under every tree in site, and heads bobbing on the pool......I think that the "Ghost" of the BASH will always be here, in the barn, the pool, under the trees...along RV row (our version of Battleship Row, had five Class A rigs lined up nose to tail, and a 5th wheel bringing up the rear)...up in the arena, I can still the cut where we dug the trench for the cook fires and dutch ovens, smell the food cookin, the coffee boilin'.....and at sunset, standing in the arena and looking north up toward the house, I can see and hear the Sons of the San Joaquin, the American Flag behind them, flying in all her glory, the sun setting! I hear Leonard, our camp cook, piping "Amazing Grace" after the Tolling of the Boats, and see the look of surprise, then the emotion on the faces of everyone as they hear the first strains of that coming from behind them....and the tear stained cheeks as they turned back around to face me after Leonard had marched over the hill to "Going Home". Yes, the "Ghost" of the BASH AT THE RANCH 2001 will always be here to remind me.....of the very special thing that happened here in June, 2001! >From the very bottom of my heart, I thank each of you who were here! Hand Salute!

Duties called, however, and family did and does come first. Sure do miss the emails and calls to and from Cowboy. I sure hope we all will be able to follow the course he laid out to join him a weee bit later on.

Hard to believe that Garry is gone, to this day I still miss the old Cowpoke and his dog Zeke whom he was having massage's done to help the little guy out so he could be happier in life And CobraCOB was also on this and other bbs's telling war stories about the "Rustie Ruskie" and "Sawzall" and how hard they were working to keep her afloat and trying to restore her to her former glory with what little they had or could get. OldGringo, Spider and Warshot were here also telling sea stories and war stories, hard to believe they are gone now.. And so many others that have come and gone, and those that didn't come back for some reason or another... The Brat and her dad have been great shipmates and friends through the years, hard to believe that because of this bbs and a few others how many submariners and enthusiast's have gotten together to save our boats and a number of boats have a second (or third) chance at life, it was a TRUE honor to meet them and work with them both on Torsk. Whalen, THANK YOU for taking me and my son sailing during Christmas... I haven't been sailing since I was his age and it was truly awesome. For those whom we have known and loved and have passed I wish you fair winds and following seas and may your journey in the afterlife be a peacefull one.

Cowboy is probably looking down on us right now and saying "If you think THAT was a Bash, wait 'till Ya'll see what we got waiting for all Ya'll up here." See you up there on Fidlers Green, Cowboy!! Great Sage of the Sea Posts: 892 Location: Palo Pinto County, Texas | Subject: RE: Memories We've been fortunate to be able to attend several 'bashes'. From coast to coast! Joe Most's Florida gig then to Cowboy's at the ranch. We missed all of Cowboy's evening activities in that we had to commute to a motel. Met lots of wonderful shipmates there. Among the many that I'll not try to name, it was indeed a pleasure to meet and visit with Paul Perris. PEP is doing a remarkable job of dealing with the cancer demon that we've endured too many years. Great memories, all! Thanks to those that were there. And with a bit more of good luck, we just might show up at another bash. I never made it to Cowboy's house & poolside but he did visit with us in our home prior to the bash. More great memories... Life is what you make of it, I reckon, but having so many shipmates within the submarine community sure makes it a lot more pleasurable!
