At random: Habitability is heavily stressed in the construction of modern submarines. Specially designed color schemes, mechanical conveniences, air conditioning, and the best chow in the Navy are supplied to make the vessels more livable. A full time staff is maintained by Electric Boat Division to work out 'human engineering' problems.

A US Airways commuter plane taking off from LGA to Charlotte struck a flock of geese, lost 2 engines and was forced to land in the Hudson River in the vicinity of the USS Intrepid (W 50s).

capacity: 146 pass + 5 crew.

People are being rescued.  Early reports are the EVERYONE got out alive, and EVERYONE is accounted for.

Air temp 21..water temp 30-35..coldest day in NYC this year.  Not one passenger entered the water.  All were rescued from the wings of the A/C.

AMAZING pictures of rescue by boats, tugs, ferries.

Simply amazing! Looks like the pilots, flight attendants, and passengers all kept their cool! Amazing response from the tugs, water taxis, and other craft that helped get the folks off. It's almost unbelievable that in all that chaos there was so much order.

Way to go, New York!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is all about the training.

We, as sailors and submariners, are all familiar with training, training and more training.

This pilot was well trained and kept his wits in an extreme emergency; a tip of the hat to the US Air Force.

But also look at the crews of these small commuter ferries. They were the first to respond; they knew what to do; and in the end it was all due to training for emergencies.

As the harbor master said, these crews did not think about it, they acted. They implemented the training they had received. As soon as they saw a problem they stopped their normal course of work and did what they needed to do.

It is great that everyone was picked up.

Bravo Zulu to these sailors of NY Harbor.

I agree, Tom, they did an excellent job.
I wonder though if that helicopter really needed to get that close and be causing all that wind and spray on the scene.

Rescuers also arrived by air. NYPD divers Michael Delaney and Robert Rodriguez were dropped from helicopters and saved two women who had fallen into the 40-degree river.
