BISTAK, Andrew Stephan, 90, of Whiting, NJ & Spring Hill, FL died January 10, 2009. Remembered for his boxing career in Carteret, NJ, he served on submarines in WWII [Raton and Cabrilla] and married Garnel after his return. They had a son, Stephan & daughter, Michele. After the death of Garnel, he raised his children working as an iron worker until he retired. Moving to Spring Hill where he lived for 17 years; active in the V.F.W. & St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church. He returned to NJ where he was active in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Whiting & served as commander of the V.F.W. Survivors include his companion of 7 yrs; his son & daughter-in-law, Steve & Paula; his daughter Michele & son-in-law, Paul Mulligan; 2 granddaughters and 3 great-granddaughters

LANG, Sumner D., 89 formerly of 3 Marla Ave., Ledyard passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at the Mary Elizabeth Nursing Center in Mystic. Born in Baltimore, MD on August 21, 1919 the son of John and Elsie Lang. Sumner married Dorothy Ricklefs in Portsmouth, NH on December 9, 1944. Dorothy passed away December 26, 2007.Sumner served in the Naval Submarine Service from 1938 until 1958. [Salmon, Seadragon, Moray] He did nine war patrols in the South Pacific during World War II and had assisted the corpsman during an emergency appendectomy performed while the sub was underway. The operation was later written about in Esquire magazine. Lang, a first class machinist mate, was assigned to the I-401 in January 1946, a Japanese submarine captured by the U.S. Navy shortly after the Japanese surrendered in 1945. The I-401 was brought to Pearl Harbor, along with four other Japanese submarines, by American crews. After his retirement from the Navy he worked for 24 years as a ships superintendent at Electric Boat Company in Groton. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter and was a life member of the Groton Sportsman's Club, the National Rifle Association and the Appalacian Mountain Club. He also was a member of the Submarine Veterans of World War II. Sumner is survived by three sons, Richard of Irvine, CA, Charles of Golden, CO and John of Titusville, Fl, two daughters, Ellen Lang of Mansfield Center, CT and Kathleen Lang of St. Petersburg, FL, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren and a sister. He was predeceased by a brother and two sisters. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 o'clock at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home,310 Thames St. Interment with Military Honors will be in Avery Stoddard Cemetery, Ledyard. Visiting hours are from 5 until 7 o'clock Monday at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Donations in his memory may be directed to the American Lung Association, 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT 06108
