Anyone else up here in the NW get one of these?  Had no idea how many patrols we've made until this showed up in the mail (and yes, I'm going - always got to have a crusty Chief 'round dem Admirals, right Ralph?).

At the risk of offending your delicate Electrician's sensibilities, and because I never have learned to stop pinging, a shower once in a while does good for controlling that crusty layer. You aren't on patrol on a diesel after all.

John,
I may be getting a little nick-picky, but..... does the 1000 patrols mean just what it says TRIDENT? I wonder how many POLARIS patrols were made, in comparison. There were a lot more boats then.

Maybe that's what's "bothering" my (basically) non-nuc brain, is the Trident thing... I'm sure that's precisely what's meant versus  ALL missile patrols now that I see it again after my first cup of coffee... AND (Walt) being "crusty" is a good thing, like not cleaning out my coffee cup everyday - LOL...

I have a collection of factoids. I pick them up as I go.

I believe this is from Jim Lawson's Facts (but don't hold me to that)

May 16, 1972 - With the return of USS John C. Calhoun (SSBN 630) from Poseidon patrol at Holy Loch, Scotland, a total of 1,000 Polaris/Poseidon deterrent patrols had been successfully completed (975 Polaris/25 Poseidon).

September 27, 1972 - Arrival of USS John Marshall (SSBN 611) at Rota, Spain, for refit, marked the successful completion of the 1,000th Polaris deterrent patrol since the Polaris weapon system was initially deployed on USS George Washington (SSBN 598) on 15 November 1960.

Twelve years ('60 - '72) to do 1,000 Polaris/Poseidon patrols and 37 more years ('72 - '09) to do 1,000 Trident?  Is this correct?

I think the Trident missile came before the 18 boats.

If it is the 1000th patrol of the Trident Submarine boats, that did not start until 1982 possibly.

And then, as someone pointed out there are only 18 of those boats vs. 41 Polaris boats.

And, once the Cold War ended did the Tridents go out on a regular, fast turnaround schedule like the Polaris boats?

Well the Trident 1 deployed in 1979 and was carried by several (12) of the 41 for Freedom as the Trident 1 was more Posiden (actually designated C4) than actually a Trident (Trident 2 was D5) so the patrols started in 1979/80. So there has been at least 14 boats doing 3.5 patrols each since 79. So if you do the math it no only does not include British deployment of Trident but does not include non T boat deployments as well.  First Trindent Boat patrol was 1982 so it has been 25 years for many and most likely the math means it is boat patrols not weapon. (unless they are refering to D5 patrols only) as all Trident weapons patrols should have excede 1000 years ago. (I think all Bangor boats are long past 50th patrol couple past or close to 100
