ROBERTS, Harry, 91 a Moorings resident since 1987, died January 28, 2009. Raised on Long Island, NY and in Gainesville, Va., Mrs. Roberts graduated from Yale University in 1939. During college, he spent summers working for Creole Petroleum Company. Following graduation he joined Gulf Oil Corporation where he worked in the Panama Canal Zone. In 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He graduated second in his class from Midshipmen School and was assigned to a sub chaser. He later volunteered for submarine duty on the USS Bashaw making six war patrols while serving as engineering and diving officer. At the end of the war, Mr. Roberts returned to the Gulf Oil Corporation. During his life time, which spanned more than nine decades, and encompassed The Great Depression, war and technological advances, Mr. Roberts chose leadership positions at every turn. He moved to Wyoming with his wife Toni in 1947. They raised five daughters. Toni died in 1985 in Wyoming. While living on his ranch in Barnum, WY, Mr. Roberts became a Barnum School Board member and later was elected President of the Wyoming School Boards Association. In 1966, He was elected Wyoming State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the first non-educator to serve in that position. He was vice-president of the Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Association. He was the founder and first director of the Wyoming Heritage Society. Mr. Roberts, having been brought up on the south shore of Long Island loved the water and sailing. His dream was to someday return to that life. He came east to see old friends and to seriously think about moving to the east. Here he met Tracy Griswold, a friend of many years. They sailed and lived aboard a boat before moving to South Passage in the Moorings. He entered into his new life with his usual gusto. He became President of the South Passage Association and was commander of the Spyglass Yacht Club. He served on the board of the Moorings Property Owners Association and was the program Director of the Yale Club of the Treasure Coast. He was co-founder and first Commodore of the Mooring Yacht Club. He served on the Moorings Board of Governors and later became it President. He always said his hobbies were fishing, sailing and poor golf. It was for those reasons that Vero Beach and Moorings Club were his dream come true. A service will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Vero Beach. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution to the VNA Hospice of Indian River County, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960, would be greatly appreciated.
