- (The Oklahoman)
BURROWS, Robert Gordon, 88, known to his friends as "Bob" or "Howdy", died in his home in OKC on Jan. 29, 2009. Bob was born in Ames, Iowa, the third child of James Austin Burrows and Martha Gertrude Bolton Burrows. When he was 9, the family moved to Stillwater where his father was a professor of chemistry. Bob quickly became a passionate, lifelong supporter of the Oklahoma State Cowboys. He graduated from Stillwater HS and entered Oklahoma State University. There he joined the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. When WWII interrupted his college career, he served with the Navy as a Submarine Fire Controlman First Class in the South Pacific. Following the war, Bob graduated from OSU with a BS in Horticulture and had a long career as a landscape architect. He was a member of the Optimist Club where he served as Lieutenant Governor for the Oklahoma District. In his retirement, he continued his avid support of OSU and volunteered his time with the Oklahoma Railway Museum. Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean Clare Marcoux Burrows, and two children, Cathy Burrows French and her husband Scott of Broomfield, CO, and Robert Christopher Burrows and wife Sherry of OKC. He was proud of his grandchildren, Kari French Stevenson (23) and husband Caleb, Katie French (20), Brice Burrows (17), and Jonathan French (11). The memorial service to honor Bob's life will be held at the Resurrection Cemetery Chapel, on Fri., Feb. 6, 2009, at 11:00am. The family invites you to wear orange and black in honor of "Howdy." In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to: Sooner Hospice, 2212 NW 50th St., Suite 143C, OKC 73112 or Oklahoma Railway Museum, 3400 NE Grand Boulevard, OKC 73111.
