FRANKLIN, Sr., James W., 88, of Poplar Grove died Thursday, February 5, 200. Born September 5, 1920, to Robert G. and Ethel M. (Wilson) Franklin. Lived most of his life in Rockford. Graduated from West High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II on a submarine in the South Pacific. James married Gayle P. Sowa on March 26, 2002, in Belvidere. He previously married Shirley Witt and later married Jean (Weeks) Thompson, who predeceased him. A machinist by trade, he also owned and operated a machine shop with his son, Jeff for 35 years in Rockford. Survivors include wife, Gayle Franklin of Poplar Grove; sons, James (Gloria) Franklin of AZ, Dr. Mark (Diane) Franklin of FL, Jeffrey Franklin of Rockford, Kent Franklin of Roscoe; stepchildren, Joleen (Chuck) Zaczek and Kevin (Jamie) Thompson of Rockford, Jeffrey (Cindy) Maina and Heather (Jeffrey) Green of Poplar Grove, Julie (Josh) O'Brien of DeKalb; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grand-children; and sister, Audrey (Darrell) Forbes of Rockford. Predeceased by parents; brother, Robert; and sister-in-law, Dorothy. Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial service at a later date.
