From the article: The ship, which is based at Pearl Harbor andhas a crew of 320, got stuck as it was transferring shore-basedofficials, including a rear admiral, to a smaller boat to take them toshore. ... Commissionedin 1994, the Port Royal has a crew of about 360. The crew stayed aboardthe ship, along with Navy officials such as Rear Adm. Dixon R. Smith, commander Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific.
Oh joy! The Admiral decided to stay aboard, so he could chew ass at his leisure.
Oh well, we have a waxing moon close to being full. The slightly higher tides at full moon, plus less draft from off-loading fuel and water, should ease pulling her off the reef.
Needless to say, the Port Royal isn't the the first USN ship to 'hit the beach' near Pearl (Guardfish on the rocks, anyone?), and it won't be the last I'm sure!

We followed the "Guardfish on the rocks" in to Pearl by an hour or so... or should I say we waved as we went past. Next patrol we carried a QM from her to sea with us...

Talk about dejevu! Back in '76 (+/-) the command that I was stationed at in Pearl Harbor, Harbor Clearance Unit #1 (Navy mixed gas divers etal) was tasked with removing one of our ARS's (Rescue Vessels - Conserver?) from the reef off Sand Island (same place as photo). Took quite awhile as the ship had to have a channel blasted out behind it in order to be pulled off the reef (ran aground at extreme high tide)... The ship and crew took quite a beating from the local newspaper during the whole episode... |
